They’ll keep claiming it’s justified because probably, legally, it is justified under their policies that could be decades old. Just because they are legal policies, don’t make them right.
I work for a city and police department near the St. Louis area. It’s a small department. Police officers and supervisory staff are my co-workers. I deal with them everyday. This department has very stringent hiring practices to weed out possible problem officers. There’s a probationary period that if the new officer isn’t meeting the standards of the department, they can be dismissed. Commanders are constantly updated and enforcing policies to better reflect a more transparent agency. Officers go through a lot of training, and with a lot of medical / doctor facilities in our city, CIT training is expanded. They pride themselves on de-escalating conflicts with minimal use of force tactics.
A lot of this happened pre-Ferguson, but it’s also been expanded Post-Ferguson as well as state/county justice guidelines were changed.
I think all departments need to take a long hard look at their deficiencies and push for changes. It’s the only way you can get the public to trust you again.
Bad actors such as the coward of Broward County will get rehired and receive backpay due to union rules.

A lot of what you just said is incorrect, even according to our liberal Governor and Mayors. People ARE flying and driving in. It’s been reported on CBS and NBC locally that up to 80% of the arrests made so far in the Twin Cities are of people from out of state. Our own Governor and city mayors said as much during their live press conference during the middle of the night last night. Or do you not believe them now either?McParadigm wrote:There are also a lot of posts on far right boards about going in and “getting their loot on,” setting fires, or starting a boogaloo.PHATJ wrote:According to local NBC media, the fire starters in the Twin Cities are white Antifa members.
I don’t think anybody knows exactly what the mix of forces in Minneapolis is, besides the actually angry locals, but I do know that there are a hellllllllll of a lot more white nationalists within 500 miles of Minneapolis than there are antifa members.
And whoever these people are, they ain’t flying in.

Re: Cops Are The Worst
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, along with mayors Jacob Frey and Melvin Carter, on Saturday condemned violent protests in the state, blaming organized outside groups for promoting unrest, while also announcing that they will fully mobilize the Minnesota national guard.
According to Saint Paul Mayor Melvin Carter, every person arrested in the city last night was from out of state: “We don’t know these folks,” he reiterated.
The dynamic has changed over the last couple days, Walz, Carter and Frey said. Protests gradually shifted from being peaceful on Tuesday, but as more people came from outside of the city, they’ve turned increasingly violent in recent days.
Mayor Carter said EVERY person arrested last night during the protests was from out of state. The governor said it is at least 80 percent, and that they will begin releasing the names. Dept of Safety Commissioner John Harrington says they are contract-tracing arrestees. - Joy Reid
“Our great cities of Minneapolis and Saint Paul are under assault by people who do not share our values, who do not value life and the work that went into this, and certainly who are not here to honor George Floyd,” Walz said. “So if you are on the streets tonight, it is very clear: You are not with us.”
“This situation can be expected to deteriorate further with these people,” Walz said, adding that violent protestors are being fed professional tactics in urban warfare by outside groups.

No. What I said was, the 500 mile radius around Minneapolis is saturated with white nationalists, and the people coming in from outside to agitate are not flying in en mass, so I would be shocked if it turns out to be an antifa-coordinated effort. The racist-vs-antifa numbers are just too one-sided in that part of the world.PHATJ wrote:A lot of what you just said is incorrect, even according to our liberal Governor and Mayors. I’m sure there are white nationalists. That has been a concern, no doubt. But you are dead wrong if you don’t think the Twin Cities is crawling with Antifa members. And it’s been four days, people from anywhere in the country could be there now. Our local media and government has acknowledged both are problems.McParadigm wrote:No. What I said was, the 500 mile radius around Minneapolis is saturated with white nationalists, and the people coming in from outside to agitate are not flying in en mass, so I would be shocked if it turns out to be an antifa-coordinated effort. Not really, but I know you guys do. Especially the main stream media, you guys trust that like it’s gospel. I guess you trust it until it actually starts blaming the people you sympathize with.cutuphalfdead wrote:All of a sudden Josh trusts the news.

I am not at all contesting the idea that a majority of violent protestors might be from out of state--who am I to say!--but "I don't trust the media, but you guys do, therefore you should trust this" is a pretty terrible gotcha.

Most of that info came straight from the mouth of our Governor. Who the fuck do you people trust as a source? Or are you just going to attack me personally because the news is what you want to hear? Lol, you guys are pathetic.Mickey wrote:I am not at all contesting the idea that a majority of violent protestors might be from out of state--who am I to say!--but "I don't trust the media, but you guys do, therefore you should trust this" is a pretty terrible gotcha.

I would expect there to be all manner of opportunists willing to delegitimize or mutate an honest demonstration for some form of personal gain. I don’t suspect in this case that the degrees of outside involvement are equal across ideologies. I’ll wait to be proven wrong.PHATJ wrote:I’m sure there are white nationalists. Not great reading comprehension skills on display here. Presenting a source that you've said you don't trust isn't a great gotcha: that's my only point bubba.PHATJ wrote:Most of that info came straight from the mouth of our Governor. Public sector unions shouldn't exist, especially not police unions. If you prefer the status quo where cops can murder and keep their jobs, at least own it.elliseamos wrote:yes, independent contractors working for private security companies would be better.simple schoolboy wrote:None of this matters so long as police unions continue to exist. If I presented I source I trust (as I’ve done many times previously), you guys would completely dismiss it and mock me and my sources (as you and many others have done repeatedly). So I presented main stream sources and you now question that because I presented them. There is no point in having a conversation with any of you.Mickey wrote:Not great reading comprehension skills on display here. Yes, precisely--there is no point having a conversation with someone who makes blanket statements about how media sources are untrustworthy.PHATJ wrote:If I presented I source I trust (as I’ve done many times previously), you guys would completely dismiss it and mock me and my sources (as you and many others have done repeatedly). In fact I would say that after spending three years posting about how all the media does is lie, you've probably permanently discredited yourself as an interlocutor and should stick to jacking yourself off to some third-tier Jeff Ament track. You're welcome to keep posting here, but there's no reason for anyone else to take your seriously.

Also "Local NBC says" is not exactly a "mainstream source," nor would it be generally considered to be endowed with rigorous journalistic standards.
