Yeah, I'm in this boat... if you'll have me, Verb.

Aren't there endeavors that could use investment here on Earth?
Goddammit, guys. Space Force!!
I'm cool with cleaning up the ocean, replacing current energy sources, allowing those that need to see a doctor to do so... you know, useful stuff.
The ocean is fine, there's still plenty of it. Uh, coal will always be there. Anybody that wants to see a doctor can see one. Not that anyone will need to since Chinamanvirus is already gone.

A taxpayer funded slush-fund for aerospace companies makes the big rocket go boom!

Unlike Lockheed-Martin or Boeing, who perpetually get contracts to design rockets that will never actually fly, at least this works.

Low bar.

The ISS has a unique position to study earth science; weather patterns, glaciers, agriculture, cities, and the oceans.

Low bar.
Hence my earlier comment about returning us to our space capability from 60 years ago.

But our government doesn't believe any of that exists.

In partnership (as far as I've seen) with NASA though. Should be clear that the "history making" seems to be about the private sector doing what the government did long before most of us were born. It's a cool thing, I watched it. But Elon Musk was over-shadowed for a minute by Solyndra's collapse, but made good with the same program. The American public made the investments that led to this, like most other investments that pay dividends for the private sector and then get forgotten.

I get this. I'm not here to dampen the day. But the fanfare is going to blur what's happening. Like many things in life (like medicine!), we the people fund or lead something only for private interests (or people, like Mr. Musk) to take all the credit.

If there are ways the rocket can study our rotting corpse of a planet so be it, but all I hear about is bougie garbage like space tourism.

Can we use Elons little boy fantasy as a way to efficiently dump our trash in space?
