It’s easy to join a peaceful rally while there’s still daylight, but an angry mob bent on destruction and chaos is another story. Maybe the Minneapolis police chief and mayor could have gone out and broken some store windows and set some fires to show how cool they are.

I used to think like macphisto--abolish the police? Who will you call if someone tries to rape you?!. But leaving aside countless examples of heinous treatment of sexual assault survivors by the cops (who are sometimes abusers themselves), the point of police abolition (or prison abolition, for that matter) is not the wholesale abandonment of law and regulation in favor of generalized anarchy. It's a recognition that the institutions we call "police" and "prison" are relatively new creations, historically speaking, dating from less than 300 years ago and with a specific relationship to things like "property" and "justice." The easiest way to say it is that police abolition is a call to reimagine how we keep our local communities safe in such a radical way that whatever the result is, we wouldn't call it "police." Defunding and disarming cops to any degree is a step in this direction.

Sorry, that seems to be the primary language spoken in this thread. When in Rome...pepperwhiteMFC wrote:Do you think cynicism will help reform things?macphisto wrote:Heartwarming! Sounds neat, but it’s all very theoretical. How would it actually work?Mickey wrote:I used to think like macphisto--abolish the police? Who will you call if someone tries to rape you?!. Say you’re walking a few blocks to your car after dining out when you’re suddenly accosted by a group of ruffians who relieve you of your phone and wallet, and then beat the shit out of you just for fun. There has been a rash of these incidents in the area, all with a similar MO. You got a good look at the guys. Who do you call?
How about a single mother with young children who is awakened in the middle of the night by people trying to get into the house. She doesn’t have a gun because she doesn’t believe in violence, but suddenly it’s at her front door. What does she do?

If you're not going to bother reading my post carefully I'm certainly not going to respond to yours bubba. Try again.macphisto wrote:Sounds neat, but it’s all very theoretical. As much as I love all this back and forth, maybe we’d all be better taking a moment or two and listen to other voices. Voices not on RM.
Think I’m going to try being kind to everyone a chance.

They can’t keep their cool shaking down one man, how can we assume they’ll stay calm amidst a riot. De-escalation training be damned. They’re simply too dangerous.Superblood Wolfmoon wrote:macphisto wrote:How do you think we solve this?verb_to_trust wrote:Let's start with demilitarization of law enforcement.

I think Metro cops in Louisville make like 35k. Imagine the type of psycho that takes a job there? You'd have to be pretty thirsty for "action".spike wrote:They can’t keep their cool shaking down one man, how can we assume they’ll stay calm amidst a riot. De-escalation training be damned. I have off work tomorrow because I'm working downtown now.

This racist “country” has been fucked from the start. I still have a shred of hope for real change, but most likely the corporate overlords in charge won’t let it happen. Lest they make a few less dollars every day.
