Re: Election 2020
Put another way, we now have a president who is very nearly incapable of re-election, escalating military pressure on protesters.

We also thought he was incapable of being elected in the first place.

Re: Election 2020
Part of the problem is that this has led people, both for-and-against him, to come close to ignoring reality in assessing his chances. This is anecdotal of course, but the few Trump-positive voices in my life, from their assessment of the election, sound exactly like Clinton supporters in 2016; it's inconceivable to them that he could lose.wease wrote:We also thought he was incapable of being elected in the first place.
He could absolutely win, but people seem to imbue him with this sort of political supernatural aura, instead of just saying what happened; he was up against a very unpopular opponent, was running against the party in power in the White House, had a bunch of things go his way, and won some squeakers in the right states.
As for why people on the right are having this self-assuredness, it's probably just tribalism; if you mainly meet, speak and interact with people who agree with you, it becomes harder to envision a country where many, if not most people, don't agree with you. I'd suspect the left may not be as susceptible this time because of 2016; I think many Demswill believe Trump is a foregone conclusion until Biden is declared winner, and maybe not even then.

Re: Election 2020
Clinton's largest aggregate poll lead over Trump from June to November 2016 was something like 7.5 points, for context. The national polls were also quite accurate in 2016 (off by 2% points, I believe) unlike some of the state polling that was off by much more.

I also don't know this for sure, but I'd imagine there has been at least some efforts to rectify the problems with state polling this election cycle. I'm most assuredly not an expert in this, but I wonder if they're by and large going to be more correct this cycle.

Guys, if he’s not winning BEFORE Sioux City’s count, then King might be done. Sioux City practices a weird brand of cut-and-paste politics (sort of like when pro wrestling tries to be inclusive?), but it has no love for or loyalty to King. And it represents a lot of the population.

I'd say Steve King losing his primary election definitely matters.
