Five people have given LTRP 5 stars. That is an insult to their entire catalogue and you five should be up against a wall.

I hope there is some darker / more experimental stuff on the album, but I am definitely in the right place to appreciate this. I wouldn't take anything away from the people who don't like it, but for me, these are top-drawer 'PJ Goes Pop' songs, and while I still hate the fucker, Brendan O'Brien probably achieved what he wanted and, I hope, what they wanted from him, in these tracks.
at the same time this makes me a little sad, because i turned to pearl jam initially for being NOT mainstream
I understand that. But to me, they were always a band that took the best from both worlds. Even on my favourite album, Vitalogy, they stuck Betterman on it. They were always highly respectful, I think, of both the 'bigger' and more broad-appeal rock bands (KISS, Deep Purple, Motorhead), as well as more strange stuff like Tom Waits. They were always basically a rock band, and to me, their courting stranger ideas and rhythms and styles was always just that; having fun to make albums a more interesting journey. Although I do love that middle-period of increasing obscurity and experimentation, they were never really low-fi indie or anything and they always had what could be described as standard 'rock' or 'pop' songs on their albums. If I wanted *not mainstream* I went elsewhere, and still do.

None of them was me, I need to state that.

I think one day it might be useful to hold an Internet wide seminar on all the gradations of feeling between 'omfg this is the best thing ever' and 'omfg this is the worst thing ever.' There are a lot of options in between, and several languages have conveniently furnished us with the words to describe them.

But to add to my post, let's see what journeys the rest of the songs take us on before writing this album off entirely.

As a long time reader you are, of course, familiar with the following:

I'm not sure starting off your album with a rejection of faith is entirely mainstream, even though it might be resistance-lite.

A word that clearly describes the sensation of grievous injury and intimations of physical harm caused by some songs you didn't like.

That's how I feel when people talk about in the moonlight in those terms.

But yeah, Ltrp is a fun catchy song I am enjoying, but hardly 5 stars.

Lightning Bolt's production definitely has a certain Wayne's-World-in-a-TV-studio quality to it, doesn't it? Who made the joke "We're looking down on Pearl Jam's music, but.. that's not Pearl Jam's music. Isn't that weird?" That was funny.

Some people need to stop acting like "This is what I like/dislike, and those who don't are idiots"

At this point, I feel as if the PJ fanbase ("the Jamily") need to form a coalition, a two-pronged dialogue between lovers and haters which will spill and emanate into the rest of the world, ultimately preaching the good message of musical appreciation. We have to learn from each other and thus help others to learn from us.

But what if they actually are idiots?

Troubling.
