It is “significantly lower than the UK’s“.

Sweden has around 60 people per square mile. England has 15 times that.

On Tuesday, Professor Neil Ferguson, of Imperial College London, whose bleak projections of future deaths from Covid-19 influenced governments around the world to institute massive lockdowns, admitted of Sweden, which did not institute harsh lockdowns, “It is interesting that adopting a policy which is short of a full lockdown – they have closed secondary schools and universities and there is a significant amount of social distancing, but it’s not a full lockdown – they have got quite a long way to the same effect.”

Speaking before a House of Lords Science and Technology Committee, the man who predicted half a million Britons could die from Covid-19 spoke of Sweden, whose 436 people per million mortality rate from the coronavirus is significantly lower than the UK’s 575 people per million. The Daily Mail noted, “As well as fewer deaths, Sweden’s GDP actually grew in the first quarter of 2020, suggesting it might avoid the worst of the economic fallout from the crisis.
That's a relatively small, homogeneous population. You really can't accomplish things in America the same way.

There's like 5-10 countries you want to be better than, it seems. Sweden is one, as are the UK & USA.

The whole point of what Sweden has done was to create a herd immunity; the idea was that you couldn't stop the spread, so you might as well take the hit but you'll come out the other side with a population much less susceptible to infection.

And lo and behold...
Sweden has revealed that despite adopting more relaxed measures to control coronavirus, only 7.3% of people in Stockholm had developed the antibodies needed to fight the disease by late April.

The figure, which Sweden's Public Health Authority confirmed to CNN, is roughly similar to other countries that have data and well below the 70-90% needed to create "herd immunity" in a population.
So, in other words, Sweden suffered far more deaths than most other countries in order to end up in the same place everyone else was anyway.

And if it's only 7.3% in Stockholm, imagine how low it is in rural and less populated areas. I get why people may have advocated for them at the outset, but to do it now even after everything else doesn't make much sense. That being said, it sure has been a trip to see Sweden, of all places, become the conservative city on a hill.

In addition to the obvious population density issue, Sweden, like a lot of other countries, also had the benefit of seeing the early impact of the virus in other countries (like the UK) and responding with social distancing and whatever else they could before things really exploded. Comparing it to the UK makes no sense at all.

If you compare Sweden to countries of similar population density and similar timelines, it's obvious that Sweden's response has had terrible results.

The only places that are even close to getting herd immunity are places like New York City and London (and even they're far from it). And what's unique about those places? They're the places that got walloped by deaths. Which illustrates the inanity of pursuing herd immunity as a strategy in the first place; if the only way to get to that is mass death, then maybe that's not the best option.

Sweden has twice our population - 212.76 times the mortality rate and 38,000 times the number of cases. I wouldn't be looking at them as a beacon of hope

HEALTH OFFICIALS BRACE FOR LIKELY SECOND WAVE OF COVID-19:
Officials from the World Health Organization hold a briefing on the latest developments of the global coronavirus outbreak. As protests continue both across the country and around the world, many epidemiologists are saying these gatherings will almost assure a second wave of outbreaks. This comes as The NY Times reports that early efforts by the CDC to contain the spread of coronavirus failed through a collapse of their system to track and gather data about Americans returning from overseas. Reports suggest that health officials were frequently told to ‘just let [passengers] go’ rather than being screened when they got off flights, creating a flaw in the CDC tracking system. More than 6,000 Americans already have died from COVID-19 just this week.

You've posted this in at least 2 threads. Do you think anyone is arguing that protesters are not at risk for COVID?
Everything's perfectly all right now. We're fine. We're all fine here, now, thank you. How are you?

Can't get it if you're in a herd formation. It's called herd immunity.

Maybe people just think fighting for justice is worth risking your life for, but cutting a haircut or going to a ballgame isn't.

I do think that unless you're kettled by the cops (which to be fair is a real possibility), it's pretty easy to take precautions at an outdoor protest--don't share a megaphone, use a mask, stay six feet apart when you can. Definitely has the potential to be safer than a haircut, though certainly a lot of people aren't having that experience.
