Re: The Protest Thread
And here's the ruling...
Livid. Absolutely livid. The NSW Supreme Court has ruled a Black Lives Matters protest scheduled in Sydney on Saturday is illegal as it will breach public health safety.
Justice Desmond Fagan ultimately assessed there would be a public safety risk in allowing the protest to go ahead, likening it to a “defiance” of decisions made by ministers and the expert health advice those decisions were based on.
Justice Fagan said he did not accept the argument of lawyers representing the protest organisers that people would attend the rally regardless of the legal decision, and that in that case, it would be safest for the public to have the cooperation of police to close of streets and allow for greater space for social distancing.
He labelled the argument “futile”.
Justice Fagan also acknowledged the right to protest and the importance of the Black Lives Matter protest in drawing attention to the treatment of Indigenous Australians at the hands of police, but reasoned that many Australians had had to forfeit rights during the pandemic, including to attend church and forfeiting their livelihoods.
Organisers had previously indicated they and supporters would attend the protest regardless of the legal decision.

The guy I work with that said earlier in the week that it was the black bystanders’ fault Floyd was killed was deployed to DC 3 days ago. I guess he won’t have anywhere to stay now.Simple Torture wrote:Where are my 3rd amendment stans at?

In giant yellow letters, D.C. mayor sends message to protesters, and to Trump
D.C. Mayor Muriel E. Bowser renamed the street in front of the White House “Black Lives Matter Plaza” on Friday and emblazoned the slogan in massive yellow letters on the road, a pointed salvo in her escalating dispute with President Trump over control of D.C. streets.

I am mad as regarding the US situation but I wouldn't be going to any protest here in Aus in this climate.LetMeSleep wrote:And here's the ruling...Livid. I would personally prefer that there were no physical group protests going on for sure. I absolutely see the potential for undoing so much of our good work re: covid.
Protest in other ways. Donate. Do other things. But don't take to the streets en masse at this time.
We have our own issues for sure, but this movement is specifically American and about US police martial law. Not the time for this here. Support in other ways.

Re: The Protest Thread
Significant crowd gathered now. There would have to be at least 1500 people here now, a policeman here tells @GuardianAus , and the event is only meant to begin in 45 mins.
Smart move. Most protesters are masked and distancing. Common sense prevailed. Well done.Sydney protest given green light
The New South Wales court of appeal has overturned a supreme court decision preventing a black lives matter rally from going ahead in Sydney today.
The protest will now proceed starting at 3pm.
Court has ruled the protest is AUTHORISED!

Re: The Protest Thread
So far it seems that masks are being worn at the protests. Distancing is another issue.Higgs wrote:I am mad as regarding the US situation but I wouldn't be going to any protest here in Aus in this climate.LetMeSleep wrote:And here's the ruling...Livid. But this is a bigger issue than C19 for a lot of people. Yes ideally we wouldn't be protesting during a pandemic but we also should be living with equality. Australia is ready for any spike in cases and if that happens over the next fortnight then so be it.
I am working today so could not make it to my local protest. I spoke with my wife earlier and we both agreed that we would have gone as a family.
btw, there's a tonne of work that can still be done with taking to the streets. I posted on fb a heap of actions that can be taken. This is a marathon. Little moments like the NFL comment or Black Lives Matter Plaza give a deep breath to all of us.

Re: The Protest Thread
On abolishing/ defunding police departments (read the thread)
I called into a (local) NPR show about the local police chief getting fired yet again for not being able to fulfill all the benchmarks to get out from under the consent decree. I asked about dissolving the local PD and contracting with the county, but the asshole that answered the question was some defense lawyer and it was not in their interest so they just dodged it. So yeah, if Camden can do it, maybe we can as well.
Bust the unions, increase the ability to respond to calls, don't enforce bullshit laws and maybe we can make policing more responsive to the communities that need it the most.

Re: The Protest Thread
Don't insult my intelligence by talking up how everyone is wearing masks, so it will be totally fine to cram 1 million people in DC tomorrow. It's beyond stupid. If you think it's a fair trade off I'm not going to argue with you but me personally, I can't go from
being told attending a small funeral will end the world to let's just see if we can get as many people as possible into a major metro area so then the next day racial injustice will magically disappear
Fuck all of this shit. Everything about it is infuriating. The injustice, the death, the infection, the inequality....Josh
