Pitch your wildest, stupidest cooking ideas
This thread is a safe space. A sounding board. A ledge for us to talk you off of. Use it when you want to wonder out loud if something is crazy enough to work.

Re: Pitch your wildest, stupidest cooking ideas
This morning I had to share the oven with my wife. I was doing a bread bake, which requires 20 minutes at 475 in a covered dutch oven and then 30 minutes at 450 with the lid off. She needed to use the oven to roast some veggies for our son.
I thought, briefly, that it would be fun to fire up the charcoal grill after that covered portion of the bake and smoke the loaf at 450 for the last half our. I still might try it one day. Seems like it would make sense. You're still using convection, and I bet the smoky flavor seeping into the uncovered bread crust would be wild.
Also, I wonder if you can achieve a good bowl of steel cut oatmeal using a french press.

Re: Pitch your wildest, stupidest cooking ideas
Well, as I waited for the water to simmer off the oats (because it was an abnormally rushed morning today) I got to wondering how I could expedite the process. I had an aha moment thinking that pressing the oats and draining off the water would do the trick. They felt soft enough, but my strainer's holes are too large.tragabigzanda wrote:What would be the purpose of a French press oatmeal? You’re not just siphoning the water and tossing the oats, so are you hoping for a unique texture or something?
But now this has got me thinking about whether or not I could approach oatmeal like a risotto sometime…

Think about all the great stuff you could add while you wait for it to steep, too.

It was a thread just like this, way back when, in a forum somewhere in North Andover, that the bread bowl was invented.

When I was a latchkey kid, I'd throw a hot dog bun filled with tomato sauce, and topped with cheese, in the toaster oven. Good times.
