It's literally the last studio album they recorded. It doesn't get any later than that. Age and length of career are irrelevant.

Petty's first album was 1976. Wildflowers was 1994. Last studio album was 2014. Not even midway. Greatest hits albums don't mean shit...Jimi Hendrix's Smash Hits came out after his first album.

18 years in should qualify. At this point, PJ was releasing Backspacer. Enough said.

I wouldn't really call it a masterpiece but Wasting Light by the Foo Fighters was surprisingly good after a run of mediocre trash.

I love Ghosteen by Nick Cave but I haven't listened to enough of his stuff to compare

I think this counts for sure, the more I listen to Ghosteen the more I think it's among his best 2-3 albums if not his single best. That said, I think he has had a lot of great late-career material; for my tastes, it's his wilder, less formed earlier albums that don't quite land.

Bill Evans's You Must Believe in Spring is, in my opinion, his greatest work (it was recorded a year before he died, in 1980).
