This is great; one reason Stone is such a compelling interview is that he speaks very practically and straightforwardly about the songwriting and recording process. Sometimes songwriters and musicians get so ephemeral in describing their process that it stops being mysterious and starts becoming tiresome. Stone really seems into talking about the nuts and bolts of how these records come together, which is refreshing.

I think it's that good lyricists make bad interviews. Ed's a terrible interview because he speaks in metaphors and long stories. It's good for a fun conversation but you'll never learn about how a record is made from him. I think it's the nature of good lyricists to be searching for words and they just can't land a concise point like Stone does for this interview. I think Trent Reznor, an amazing musician, is a great interview but he's not known as a top shelf lyricist. Bob Dylan is not a good interview. I think there's something to that.

Sometimes Ed is a pretty good interview. His chat with Gleason is amazing. And he was good in the podcast he did this year.

Stone is great because he’s a musicians musician. Straight guitar player. He’s more technical about it than Ed. That’s why I could Listen to stone talk because he approaches it as a guitar player. I could hear that shit all day long.

What's Stone's backstory for Buckle Up?

I don't think he talked about the lyrical content at all, but from memory he talked about how the creative process for this album was challenging for him personally because he wasn't sure if what they were working on was an album, and if it was, what kind of album it would be/what kind of songs it would need. It sounded like he had some "heavier" stuff that he either didn't bring to the band or they didn't pursue. I think he talked about how he had the melody for Buckle Up first, then the lyrics, and referenced that scene from 101 Dalmatians . He said if you have great lyrics but a bad melody, you just have a poem. It became a PJ song when Ed heard it and said he wanted to sing it. Stone got very excited talking about Jeff's bass parts, and called him a fearless overdubber. He's proud of Buckle Up because it expands the band's musical palate.

I wanna listen to that demo...and yes, Jeff´s bass is great there. Also, its so cool to hear how much Stone trusts Ed. He was super exited that Eddie chose that one.

One of my all-time favorite rock biographies is Bruce by Peter Ames Carlin, exactly because there will be a lengthy interview snippet where Bruce describes a conflict or experience the way stoned Joe Biden would describe a fever dream, directly followed by very pragmatic interviews with the band where they’re like “Nah he fuckin fired us.”
