Illinois ran 25k tests today with 600 positives. 2.4% positive rate, which has been steadily dropping.

It's all relative though. Oregon is delaying some of their opening plans because they had 800 tests in a WEEK.

I feel like until the past day or two, the use of face masks has been almost 100%; everyone had one on, or seemed to have one available if they had taken it off for a few minutes. Again, this has gone down a bit in the past few days, but I didn't know if they were as ever-present around the country as they are here.

People have to wear them in stores and courthouses here but outside of the mandatory areas it's pretty hit or miss.

I do want to point out, though--and again, not trying to pick a fight, just curious how you square this: earlier in this thread you argued that high-risk people are responsible for themselves and shouldn't expect other people to wear masks for their benefit (specifically in the context of wearing one while running on crowded city sidewalks). Does personal responsibility for addiction not play a role here too? If we, say, adopted your postal code plan, would this not penalize other people who live in that postal code, some of whom might need their checks asap?

Lest this appear as some kind of gotcha, my real point here is this: isn't there a larger question about the extent to which we can allow drug addiction--which to some extent is unavoidable--to guide how we implement social programs? Isn't there a danger that by invoking it, you've opened a pathway for chipping away at universal social programs until they've become means-tested? In order words, are the engineers of social programs responsible for people (drug addicts) who are in some significant way not responsible for themselves, even if we acknowledge that addiction can be genetic or that it can be brought on by social and economic conditions outside the addict's control?

I square the circle somewhat irrationally by making a distinction between those I think able to fend to themselves and those who are unable to. That may be via health reason (including addiction), mental health situation or just where they momentarily find themselves.
I think there are many issues, and this is one where answers are very tough to come by, especially answers that have a consistent philosophy or ideology. When rights compete with each other I always feel the more compassionate way is the best course. Sometimes I argue against this, and I am usually wrong when I am.

Around here it seemed to hover around 50-60%, maybe up around 75% during the peak.

not sure if this was posted here or not - but read something recently that questioned whether covid is actually primarily a vascular disease and not respiratory. obviously it is spread through breathing - but would explain why so many mixed results with ventilators. the issue is the dynamics of people's red blood cells - not just the ability of the lungs to take in the air

If they're running the same amount of tests on the weekends like they are a lot of states it's not a big deal. The deaths are what they don't seem to report on the weekends.

I saw a guy in the supermarket last week with a piece of printer paper scotch taped to his face. He had printed "VOTE 'DEM OUT" onto the paper. He was walking the wrong way down every aisle (the supermarket made all the aisles into one-way streets to try to control traffic)

My county passed a mask requirement.

I was at the main intersection of town counting people Friday night. I counted 30 people without masks, 1 with a mask around their neck, and 0 people wearing masks.

Granted, the requirement in indoors, but presumably, the people walking through downtown are about to go into a building.

On the plus side, the restaurant I was going to for take out, wouldn't let anyone in to even pick up their order unless they were wearing a mask.

Cedar Point is about to open in July and is requiring everyone over 2 years old to have a mask. This goes above and beyond state requirements for amusement parks in Ohio. A lot of people are complaining and say they won't go which I'm totally fine with as that leaves fewer people trying to get a reservation to get in.

I saw a whole list of restaurants in Myrtle Beach that had to close down a week after opening b/c there were cases of COVID in the restaurants.

For example, Illinois actually ran a few thousand more tests for Sunday's release than Thursday's this past week. Number of tests run seems to be in the low 20k each day, which makes me wonder why? Is that capacity or the actual number of people seeking testing on average? Tough to say but Illinois being one of the states trending down right now is surprising to me.

I feel like here in Connecticut, people have been great about the masks. Haven't seen many people without one in public. Every business has a sign on the door saying you must wear a mask, and no one seems too bothered it. That I've heard of, anyway.
