All you need do is "do do doodoo do do dooo" to Black to remind yourself of that 8-)
That do dooing was HANDS DOWN the best part of that song.
Yes it is. Plus the solo over top of it.
The whole "My world is nothing with out you Why oh why!" performance is damn cheesy and melodramatic.

I can accept this cheese just as much as I can a more upbeat cheese.
There's the dog. You can't fake that stuff. Confess with your mouth.

There was one word in the 90's that when you said it to attribute a band, everyone immediately recognized Pearl Jam - "pathos" 8-)
I remember my friend saying in defense of PJ that pathos is a part of tragedy.
I liked that.

If Ed sings this one live with a serious face instead of smiling, it will look silly. But after the Fixer we know he will.

There's a little "eeeeeaaaaaaoooowwww" that goes through the pause into the solo. Then another "OW!" during it. That stuff was missing from Backspacer more than anything, the sense that they were actually enjoying what they were doing.

I really don't care much for the Black Keys, and I really don't care for half assed Black Keys. Its a clunker.

Its an experiment, but without any real desire to give more than a passing exploration of the sound. Its just dabbling, not real exploration. Save it for the B-sides.

very nice bass in the chorus but it doesn't elevate it above its 80s trivial radio pop status it holds in my mind. Jeff is a great musician. i remember a short Q&A in Rolling Stone just before No Code came out and he said that his job was to fuck up songs that sounded too much like something they had heard before. you gotta respect that.
also, i really like Mike's work on this song, i mean, it may be the reason i'll look forward hearing it again.

Definitely hear the Black Keys on this one. This song sounds like a Riot Act song,, minus Eds riot act mumble singing.

Why is everything people find mediocre described as '80s'?

I think this started as just the riff and the chorus was written later.
This one wanted to be a 60's blues rock song. It's even produced that way which is evident especially in the instrumental parts. I don't think it has a good enough riff for that to succeed though. If the last part of the song was the 1st clip of it heard i'd be disappointed by the song.
I think what saves this song and makes me like it at the end is the vocal melody and the chorus that successfully distracts me from the wannabe blues.
Also i would have done at least the 1st verse an octave lower.

LTRP - Man, could have been great but that chorus is so bland. Great guitar work and I like the swampy stagger of the rest of the song but i picture a mid 40's dude, chaperoning the high school prom, bopping his head to the chorus off to the side whilst drinking punch.

You really dropped the ball at "than Supersonic ever did." That song is what the term "b-side" was invented for.
