the sound on their first album can pretty much be cured by turning up the bass disproportionately and listening to it loud

BOLA actually sounds really muddy at times, feels like it's all over the place. it's not as easy as just 'turning it up' ... Ashes in the Fall is a clear exception, however, and one of the finest tracks they've ever made

Guerilla Radio might be the most overrated RATM song.

I never even think bout Renegades when i talk about RATM.
me too, it's just not a rage album in my head and i tend to associate it with some last second breakup consolation prize

morello's guitar work is pretty bland in most tracks on that album, like a caricature of a morello rage album... Street Walking Man being probably the most interesting

its got radio single structure - pretty formulaic - i'm used to it at this point but the solo actually just sounds terrible on the album (kazoo harmonica) but live the effect he uses there is waay more ballsy

they often F up the intro live though... like there is too much re-feed and they get lost in the timing

I really don’t get the praise for their rhythm section. They’re the Van Halen of the 90s - exceptional singer and guitarist plus a couple of perfectly fine guys on bass and drums.

If you’re looking for Dick-measuring levels of technical proficiency, then maybe I guess? But for feel/vibe, I’m not sure there’s a better rock rhythm section in the last 30 years.
Hell yeah, man. They fucking groove.

Wilk is extremely basic. Which is why I feel I can emulate him. Not a knock, it works fine. He provides exactly what the songs need.

The top 16 in the tournament are probably their 16 best, or close to it.

How do you rank the RATM and Audioslave records? In my mind, RATM is a poor man's Audioslave. Audioslave took all that was infantile and simplistic about RATM and crafted it into something beautiful.

My rankings:

Audioslave self titled
Revelations
Out Of Exile
Renegades
Battle of LA
RATM self titled
Evil Empire [distant last]

Not a knock on Chris. Soundgarden's top albums and even Euphoria Morning and Temple Of The Dog would be right up there if we included his career. Superunknown on top.

I am not the hugest RATM fan, though in large part because it’s just been so long and I sort of moved on. To rank these together I would place them over Audioslave because 1) I just didn’t listen to Audioslave maybe enough times, 2) RATM’s sound just seemed to work better with Zach De La Rocha than with Chris Cornell:

1) Rage Against the Machine
2) Battle of Los Angeles
3) Evil Empire
4) Audioslave
5) Renegades
6) Out of Exile
7) Revelations
