Speaking of learning, didn't you go to FSU way back? Just found out my beloved UF's gator bait chant has been racist this whole time. :shake: :shake: :shake:

I wonder what FSU's mascot will be this time next month. And if that coach that lies about talking to black players about racism will still be there.

Sorry, you specifically said "let's not..."

Yeah, they tend to hide behind the excuse that the Seminole Nation (or some sort of council, I can't remember and it doesn't really matter) has endorsed their use of the mascot, but of course they make *money* off of that agreement so I can't imagine it counts for much with the broader indigenous population and will be targeted soon. Which, having been at Mississippi right after they changed their mascot, will be a whole to-do that will bring out the worst kind of alumni, to say nothing of current students.

The coach, yikes, but football has been a mess there for almost a decade, starting with the Jameis rape case.

As an aside I actually had no idea "gator bait" had a racist connotation, but it's almost as if the practice of racism is deeply interwoven into this country's history. If only there were a thread to discuss that...

Yeah, it's going to get really ugly.

...and OMG this is wonderful. Thank you for bringing into in my life. I have no memory of this happening, but...

That's actually the second mascot change, which happened a few years after I left. The first one was the switch from Col. Reb to Rebel Black Bear, which did not go over well. The gas station near my house sold not this exact shirt but a variation on the theme and, well...

Image

That same year some undergrads put a noose around the James Meredith statue (first black student), and though it wasn't articulated as part of the mascot issue it definitely came from the same atmosphere. And of course there's the ongoing state flag debate, calls for the Confederate monuments to come down (which I believe just happened today, actually), renaming streets on campus that are currently named after big slaveowners, etc. FSU doesn't have quite the same campus culture, and the mascot isn't an articulation of white identity, so I don't think it will be nearly as bad, but it will definitely get nasty.
