I don't have an issue with statues or monuments that do things like list confederate war dead at a battlefield and I don't see a reason to blow up Stone Mountain, but all those statues that were put up in the middle of the 20th century that so many people pretend are relics from Reconstruction... those can come down.*

*via civil means, not the mob
Why? What business is it of yours? Who cares if they're relics or not? Those are probably the least likely to have been built by racists.
Dude... come on. The peak era for building these monuments was the height of Jim Crow, with a smaller surge during the civil rights era. This is pretty easy.

I don't understand what Burt is even trying to argue here. He's decrying a hidden argument that's plainly not hidden.

Burt is insane and he's been in hiding and away from the board for 2-3 months. Cut him some slack.

In all honesty, though; does this argument happen in other countries? I've often asked this without finding one. Are there monuments scattered around government buildings and public spaces for the IRA in Northern Ireland? There's no one-to-one comparisons, but does this debate even happen anywhere else?

Outsiders? Hiding the argument? Aren't many of us Americans debating the argument right now? Is it controversial to say we shouldn't commemorate the confederacy with monuments & statues? Put that shit in a museum and take a pilgrimage if you want to honor them. Shouldn't be on display in public.
If you're not from the south, you're an outsider in this context. Who is this "We"?

I don't know, but in this case, even the most famous confederate general was against this.
Old letters from Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee reveal the commander of the confederate army during the American Civil War opposed symbols, such as the monuments to Confederate figures that protesters are calling to be removed — and in some cases, removing themselves.

Lee fought to preserve the institution of slavery, but one letter written after the Civil War in 1866, addressed to Gen. Thomas L. Rosser shows Lee opposed the erection of Confederate monuments, symbols he said would keep division alive.

Lee’s letters said that while he would be grateful for such a gesture, these symbols would slow the country instead of “accelerating its accomplishment; & of continuing, if not adding to, the difficulties under which the Southern people labour.”

Years later, when invited to a Gettysburg memorial, Lee declined.

He said it was wiser “not to keep open the sores of war but to follow the examples of those nations who endeavored to obliterate the marks of civil strife.”

If I was Robert E Lee, I wouldn’t want to revisit that time I had diarrhea in Pennsylvania and blew the whole war effort, either

To answer my own question:

Obviously, any losing attempt to fight the state must necessarily not be celebrated by the state, except in rare cases such as this, but that's hardly a moral thing. That's just common sense.

The memorials went up as a lure to get the south to willingly assimilate. This strategy worked. Once this was no longer necessary, ie. after any lingering southern identity or culture outside of what is allowed by the U.S.government is weakened enough, they come down.

That's all any of this is lol

Oh me easily. Trump still thinks he can score points off them.
You're safe, burt. I promise you.
But are the cops in Minnesota hoping for a fair trial safe?

are you actually suggesting here that the cops wont be getting a fair trial?? lol
That is the state's Attorney General and his son is leading the call to disband the city police department from the city council. So no, I'm not suggesting that, but I doubt the state will want to risk an acquittal and further protests.

Looks to me like they're coming down when large groups of protesters decide they've had enough.

But they also....shouldn't be acquitted, so it seems weird to introduce this reading that their conviction is a politically-motivated fait accompli rather than the logical extension of what happens when you kneel on someone's neck for nine minutes until they die.
