Didn't expect to hear that from you. I was listening to a bit of Fantastic Damage last night and the production was flooring me. Had me wanting more.
I am interested in whatever he's done in the last decade, though. Based on reviews, it does feel a bit like the Def Jux stuff leans a little too conceptual for what I'm looking for, which sort of feels like a product of it's time. Wasn't this around the same time Avalanches, Deltron 3030, etc came out?

Hey Trag, I listened to The Cold Vein last night. 3am, empty city streets, those bare beats blaring with samples swelling all over my speakers. I liked it.

You have a much better ear for that sort of thing than I do, but whatever is going on with El-P's production on there works for me. As far as hip hop experience goes, grew up on DJ Screw and No Limit stuff mostly, so that homemade sound feels right. The verses on this album are something else.

Cancer 4 Cure has some amazing tracks -- "The Full Retard" and "Drones Over Bklyn" especially. That was the album that introduced me to El-P, on Orpheus's recommendation probably. I find he gets a little exhausting over long periods (just because the production and delivery are so pummeling), but generally speaking I really love his stuff.

I'll check it out.

25 years ago today, Biggie Smalls released Life After Death, weeks after being murdered. maybe the best rapper ever. total showcase for puffy's sampling skills. this is one of the most influential albums in rap music. i also feel like it was one of the albums that started to show hip hop was getting a mainstream audience.

Quite a year for hip hop. I enjoy all of these quite a bit. If anyone cares.
I was going to put this in Jorge's "videos about music (not music videos)" thread, but saw this thread on page one and it's way more appropriate.
Cool ten minute segment on J Dilla's MPC3000. I learned a ton here about how the sound on albums like Donuts or DJ Shadow's Endtroducing.... came together and now all I want to do is find one of these things and make beats.
