I like Hesitation Marks too. My Everything omitted album gets a lot of plays when I work out.

the same ones that are not respected across the entirety of the internet. The aggressive way things are dismissed and the way points are scored by going after things other people care about in as mean spirited or excessive way as possible.

i don't think it's been that bad in this thread yet, outside a few sporadic comments. Well, not recently. Who remembers what happened 300 pages ago?
I do. Sometimes I still cut myself because of it.
okay, well at least they're not going to waste
I also really like NIN's 'Hesitation Marks'.
does that give you credibility or take it away?

Verb_to_trust endorsement: "Hesitation Marks is absolutely perfect. If you cut just one song from it, you lose Everything."

1) Some people are realising they don't like PJ anymore.

2) Some people are realising they were always just a rock band and any 'experimental' or indie street-cred was wholly imagined aside from a few novelty songs dotted around the albums.

No way. Pearl jam were not "just a rock band". If they were, none of us would be hear wasting our fucking time talking for 700 pages about an album that we haven't heard yet...

and i still like pearl jam.
That is the problem. Or luxoury problem, actually. Because there is always something more. Something you can not really explain in words. Right now, I hear that in Swallowed Whole. It does not matter if you think the lyrics are weak or hippyish, or whatever criticism you can come up with, that 'something' is there. You can call it magic, or a certain mood, feeling. Something between the lines. They were never just a rock band, I very much agree with that. At the same time, that is why some fans do not allow them to just have fun, and make songs just for fun. And speaking against what I just wrote, in a way: the happiest sounding songs on this album turn out to have some illuster lyrics...

I have been listening all day. I am afraid this is the album I always needed. I will know in a month. This feels really different. I mean here we have five songs including MYM. To me as a group the are very good a couple great and some that are very solid. Pendilum has that tour video music so this just has to be a gem. Sirens could be a gem. Infallable as well sounds like it could be great. I don't have a problem with Future Days, and could picture moments where it would be lifted up by events in my future days. Yellowmoon sound solid. Sleeping By Myself is not a big deal either way. My Fathers Son sound at least interesting, but it could be really good as well I don't think it will suck. This all adds up to a great album.

I've been thinking this, too.
I just had a stupid thought that the key to the album is My Father's Son...
Then it is more like they threw away the key, I think ;). There certainly is a theme, and I think what holds the album together is that every single song does not 'fit in'. So, then they all fit in, in a way. Weird is the first word I think of now when you mention My Father's Son. And that may make sense. Lyrics that seem not to match the music. Happy songs with unhappy lyrics, and happy lyrics with a twist suddenly turning cynister. Maybe it is just time for me to go to bed, but I am almost at the last page ;).

So much this. I mean I've just heard five songs but I agree based on these.

Can you name another album in PJ's catalogue that put you in a similar mood to the one you were in whilst listening to Lightning Bolt ?

No, sorry. But that is okay. It is a new album :). And my mood during the listening session was not very natural,of course. I was mainly trying to catch it all since we only got one shot at it. Also, I am not so much an album type of person but more a songs type. Even with concept albums. I my car I can listen to the same album for months in a row, and at home I prefer to listen to all music at random. Just like in my mind. It's like one big jukebox :).

groetjes, and good night (it's 3 am here now)

PHATJ wrote:I don't care if PJ is "just a rock band" or not experimental enough for some of you. I never went to PJ to play a style of music unfamiliar to me. I went to PJ because they played music I grew up with and loved. Every album was more than satisfying to me. Most of their albums have been amongst my favorites of all time. Backspacer was their first release that I didn't love. And I did get a bit down on the band for that. But after 20 years and 9 albums and about 200 songs, how upset should I really be? Not very in my estimation.

Now we finally get new music. And after four years, people's expectations are through the roof. They have their personal vision for what PJ has to be and inevitably those expectations can never be met. I have expectations too. I expect this album to be Pearl Jam. Whatever they are now. And I expect to really love most of it. After all they are 8/9 so far in delivering albums that I really love. So the odds are pretty good.

Lastly, I could not possibly care less what anyone else thinks of PJ or this new album. If I love it, I'll love it. If I like it, then fine. If I hate it, my loss. But my opinions will be mine. No message board post from someone I don't know on the other side of the world is going to dictate my feelings for the music I hear.

So far, I think Lightning Bolt has a chance to be a wonderful album. I have already really loved three of the six new songs we've heard. I also enjoy two of the remaining three to varying degrees. This leaves me very optimistic for the songs we have yet to hear. And what is better then sitting on the verge of a new album release that we've waited years for, all the while listening to new songs that make you excited and full of anticipation? For me, not much is better.
Mods, can we sticky this?
nope but it is a nice quote to post
Joke. It was just a little fuck yeah that's all.
Thanks gents.
