the BoB fade out archive

Post by stip »

are the fade outs a new problem, or have we just not noticed before.

I don't have time to do this, but we need a few enterprising posters to quickly run through the 5 BoB records (vs, vitalogy, no code, yield, and backspacer) and note which songs have fade outs and which one's dont.

O'Brien mixed Riot Act and a good chunk of Binaural too.

Yes, I would presume so.

"Rival" for me. It's way too early and quick.

I'm also not a fan of the fade out in "In Hiding". Why not just let Stone's little guitar figure resolve? It's silly.

I like the way the guitar in In Hiding just kind of disappears but it may have needed another run-through or two for that to really be effective.

The fade out for rival is the most despicable thing any pearl jam producer has ever done.

I think Brendan didn´t touch this. I want to bitchslap BoB for the fade outs too, but I guess we are over blaming him, the band should be the real target in this. I think they prefer leaving the long outros and the solos to be a live thing, which I get but frustrate me beyond words, I´m an "album´s person". This is why I haven´t listen to the last The National album too much.

interesting theory. But there is way too much discussion and speculation in this thread without our list. Why is no one working on that?

Which is ironic, I don´t think the band knows how to end some songs particularly well live. Lack of practice suppose.

Someone's probably already done this and I've wasted my time, but:

Vs:

WMA
Rats

Vitalogy:

Pry, To
Corduroy (my favourite PJ song)
Satan's Bed
Aye Davanita
Immortality

No Code:

Sometimes
Who You Are (very short fadeout at the end)
In My Tree
Smile
Habit
Red Mosquito (very short fadeout at the end)
Present Tense
I'm Open

Yield:

No Way
Given to Fly (very short fadeout at the end)
Wishlist (before the song finishes)
Do The Evolution
Low Light
In Hiding (very short fadeout at the end)
Push Me, Pull Me
All Those Yesterdays

Binaural:

Evacuation
Light Years (short at the end)
Of the Girl (short at the end)
Rival

I wouldn't call Who You Are a fade-out. Thoughts?

The fadeout on Corduroy is perfect and should be proof that fadeouts are not inherently a bad thing.

BO'B just fades these out for a split second instead of letting the actual instruments resonate fully to their natural end, and the problem applies to everything in my list with parentheses. You highlighted the same issue when you said "Why not just let Stone's little guitar figure resolve? It's silly."
