I really think Getaway might be a song I would point to of PJ using some pop tropes and doing it really, really well. The funny part is some of it is just really blatant lifts (like that trick with cutting out everything but the drums and vox) but it just comes together really well for me.
Listening to the songs more today has made this one in particular a hit for me.

THIS. Those two have been good together since Mart joined. But the last couple tours they've been LOCKED IN. Jeff is gonna dominate this album Matt is gonna be supporting him along the way.harmless wrote:Matt and Jeff. MATT AND JEFF.

Re: Lightning Bolt - October 15
Really been going about listening to these in a very different way than I usually would have in the past. I'm doing one straight through, and then taking a good 12 hour break.......and wow, do I ever appreciate them. Make no mistake, this is not PJ from 91, 93, 94, 96, 98 etc......those days are gone, and I suspect if they still sounded like that, this board would be half the size, and might get lonely. It may have gotten old hat....who knows. These songs really shouldn't be compared to anything, cause really.....comparing anything to anything in life, usually brings on a downer more times than not. I really like these songs, and I'm realizing, it's not cause they're new, it's cause they make me feel good. Hell, LTRP really made me a little ill on my initial listen.....I too envisioned the sitcom scene in my head etc, but now, after long breaks in between....I actually like it a fair amount. The other's have just gotten better and better......especially SW, and LB. As has been said, if these are the bottom songs, then fantastic.....and if they're equal to what's coming......that won't be a bad thing either. I think so many of us are guilty of expecting another "Corduroy", "Given to fly", "Black", "DTE" or whatever song you're longing to be repeated....but the reality is.....that's the past. Either we realistically embrace what we now have, or I guess we nix what for some of us is/was our fave band. I'd prefer them to keep going. Despite what some here might say....there has to be some little part of each record that appeals........hell....I'll even admit there's parts of RIOT ACT I like. Now excuse me while I go rinse out my mouth, and wash my 2 typing index typing fingers.

Re: Lightning Bolt - October 15
after another day with these songs (although I got to hear them only a few times today, not the massive binge yesterday) I'd rank them like this
1. Lighting Bolt. I'm prepared to call this a 5 star song for now (obvious caveat that this is a new song, etc. etc.)
2. Swallowed Whole. Something about the whole package here is very appealing and has been creeping up on me. I still can't put my finger on what it is, but I want to spend more time with this song to figure it out
3. LTRP. I like the swagger in the guitars, and unlike some of you I really like the chorus and how it doesn't quite settle in next to the verses.
4. Getaway. Love the ending. The rest of this song is fine, but I'm not struck by it then same way others seem to be.

Quick note...I can't help bit imagine what Got Some would have sounded like if the guitars had the same sound as Getaway. Especially the end of the song. That is all. ..

This.
I can't get over how great this song is. I liked it well enough from Wrigley, and was disappointed when that ending solo didn't make the cut, but I am loving this song the more I hear it. I've been putting the new songs on repeat while doing other things around the house, and while the others can fade into the background of my mind, this one always pulls my attention in. It really is soaring in a GTF kind of way, and there is a lot going on in the song if you pay attention. I love Mike's early solo, the fade out (too short) thing he plays and Ed's lyrics/delivery. 5 stars, most definitely.

and I love the hell out of fade outs. I think it lends a timelessness to the song, like it's still playing somewhere long after I can't hear it anymore.
I like it on Lightning Bolt and Let The Records Play.

I'm just thinking since there's well over 700 pages in this thread that perhaps we all overanalyze PJ's music nowdays both positively and negatively? You know, instead of just realizing it's just rock music? Hahaha....Naaaaaaaaaw! Not us!
