Here is the death rate trend line overlaid on the new cases, but shifted back based on the average hospital LoS before death. In other words, here’s the death rate relative to when the people who died would have appeared on the new cases graph.



I expect that we have gotten better at treating this with time, and the fact that new cases have been rolling out mostly in new areas that weren’t already struggling with capacity helps a LOT, but we are still at least a week away from being able to presume anything about whether the huge spike in cases will ultimately lead to a spike in deaths.

Complete tangent here, but my hate for Florida somehow expanded watching the Epstein documentary on Netflix and I was thinking, with schools closed and so many more people out of work this Spring, this guy would have probably lowered his rates and increased his abuses. The state of Florida really needs to sink faster. Also, insert Bugs sawing this state off the map gif.

Look man, Florida sucks for a lot of reasons, but none of them are unique to Florida nor even are they there in the highest concentration. The county with the biggest number of cases outside NY/LA/Chi is Maricopa County, Arizona.

Shouldn't the hospitals have been working on clearing all non-Covid patients from ICU for the last few months? That's what my province has done to ensure it has the ICU beds required if we hit a bad patch. Being at 75% capacity (or close to) without Covid patients seems high, at least higher than where I live is usually at. Our bed shortages are not in ICU but in general care areas usually.

I am not sure of the exact protocol but we moved as many patients out of ICU as possible and delayed over 30,000 surgeries, many that would have required post op ICU care. I think we had our non-Covid patients down to under 20%, and at our worst Covid case outbreak, no hospital was over 60%. That may be easier in Canada where hospitals are managed at provincial/state level and the delaying surgeries is possible.

Recall that I develop and deliver training for the Emergency Department in one of Seattle’s downtown hospitals, and spent most of March and part of April working 8 hour days, 7 days a week to train clinicians from other parts of the hospital to support the ICU. I went 28 days without a day off, because we were moving so many people through.

When COVID overwhelms ICUs, many of those medical professionals whose services are significantly reduced take ICU shifts to help with capacity...but they’re generally not doing these shifts *IN* the ICU. Instead, sections of the hospital whose patients cannot currently come in are being turned into makeshift ICU run-offs, mostly for COVID cases, so that trauma care can continue.

The problem has more to do with the availability of supplies. An ICU will still see a trauma victim, but will have less equipment and fewer supplies to care for them. Having time to ramp up national production of medical equipment was supposed to be part of the value of flattening the curve.

I'm not sure about Texas--I know in Pennsylvania they delayed a ton of non-essential surgeries, but I also don't know that those surgeries were designated for ICU rooms in the first place. I would imagine the problem is more that, especially on Texas, there's no state oversight to make sure that hospitals have a sufficient number of ICU rooms in the first place relative to the population, and that they are holding them open for COVID. Remember Texas reopened a few weeks ago. Again, not sure of the specifics but if you want to suggest this was poor planning I'm CERTAIN there's enough evidence for that.

My friends mom was in ICU on a ventilator for a week being treated and was saved and sent back home and now she is back at work at the hospital.

Also my friends husband, more my age, was also sent to ICU and treated the same way for over a week. His wife had to drop him off to the doctors while they were all wearing haz mat suits.
