Can someone give me the elevator version of how Hoon came to be on Use Your Illusion, and what his music career looked like between then and Blind Melon's big break?

In Los Angeles, Hoon befriended his sister Anna's high school friend, Axl Rose. Rose invited Hoon to join him in the studio, where his band Guns N' Roses were recording their albums Use Your Illusion I and Use Your Illusion II (both released in 1991). Hoon sang backing vocals on several of the tracks, including "The Garden" and "Don't Cry." Rose also invited Hoon to appear in the video for "Don't Cry."

hoon/rose were both from the same area in indiana, so i think shannon knew axl at least superficially (via hoon's sister) before they were both in l.a. and they got closer. i could be wrong, of course, but that's what came to my head as i read the thread. there's an entire chapter on their relationship in Greg? prato's book, which i have somewhere. if i can find it i'll refresh my memory.

Rumor has it that Hoon bought the cocaine that killed him in New Orleans at a night club in Houston called Numbers. Numbers is still there, right next to a place I often get margaritas and tacos. It's not uncommon for the younger generation to mistakenly call the club "hashtags" since their marquee has a pound sign denoting the club's name. RIP Shannon Hoon.

I was really really really really hoping that I could share this with a little more excitement and fanfare but just fell short of a musical dream for me.

I was asked to score the trailer for this new documentary



I was asked by the team and from a guy I've been in touch with through music for about 15-20 years now that i originally met through pj fandom. When I realized there was a rollingstone article on this and danny clinch was involved, my hopes skyrocketed. The producers all loved my take on it and would have used it but one of the band members put up a stink regarding rights and royalties so they ultimately just let the band rework a cover of no rain, which you can hear in the trailer.

I am a little crushed about it right now just because I got so excited and it got so close to a dream come true. However, I guess im just really fucking lucky they thought of me and almost used it!

Hoping to work with him again in the future as he is doing quite a bit of work these days. Also hoping that his relationship with danny clinch continues. Im all about a good rock doc and hope to lend something to a project in the future.

Id shit my pants if it ever came to reality.

i watched this tonight and it’s as heartbreaking as one might expect it to be. bless him, though, for giving us this movie. dude had a uniquely special soul about him.

there's a scene at the end where shannon and lisa are celebrating his 28th birthday, shannon at a table alone (lisa is filming) with a cake and candles on it, and lisa sings 'happy birthday', finishing with '...and many more'. shannon stares at the cake for a bit before half-heartedly blowing out the candles. less than a month later he's dead.

the last few months of his life he makes clear he is not in a good space and what is going on around him is not a good environment for him- he just wants to be home with nico and lisa and plant trees and be a dad. yet he pushes through, and it kills him.

i can't stop thinking about this.
