And yet in NYC ( from NYT):
“We’ve been looking very closely at the number of positive cases every day to see if there is an uptick in the context of the protests,” Ted Long, executive director of the city’s contact tracing program, said. “We have not seen that.”
I wonder what the main difference is between LA and NYC... Weird how ones of them is showing major increases and the other isn't. I guess there must not be any mass gathering protests here.

Or maybe there are different strains of the virus in different geographic regions.

Me, reading that Arizona, Arkansas, California, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Texas all have record new case numbers: “Of course! The states that were home to the most active and heavily attended BLM protests!”

Yeah man I thought this part was particularly relevant:
Nonetheless, they found that the protests had no significant effect one way or the other on the incidence of covid-19.
The rest of it--where they hypothesize that the protests, for a variety of reasons, led to increased overall social distancing--is just that: hypothesis. But whether it's true or not does little to affect the conclusion that the protests did not lead to an uptick in cases. Can't imagine a reason why the cops who were near the protests would all get sick but the actual protestors wouldn't, the latter of which would have surely been reflected in the data.

So maybe, just maybe, the LA cops all have covid because of other factors--their general working conditions vs the WFH crowd, increased exposure to homeless and prison populations, or the fact that at least a chunk of them are thick-necked dipshits with god complexes who almost certainly are not masking up on or off the job.

College students in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, have been throwing parties in which they invite people infected with the coronavirus and gamble on who comes down with the illness first, city officials say.

Tuscaloosa City Councilor Sonya McKinstry told ABC News about the practice on Wednesday. The city's fire chief, Randy Smith, first reported the parties at a meeting on Tuesday, according to WBMA.

Smith said the fire service had received reports of students throwing parties and inviting "known positives" but initially thought it was a rumor.

"Not only did the doctor's offices help confirm it, but the state confirmed they had the same information," Smith said, according to WBMA.

It's because you both touch your mask, and thus your face more often, it's not shown to stop spreading of the virus, and it's proven that it makes those wearing it less careful. So if you want to wear it, fine. No one is stopping you. But it shouldnt be demanded of others. As long as they follow other more important procedures, like washing their hands regularly, keeping distance to people they don't know (or that they don't know if are ill or not, even family members from other areas, not those you live with).
You wear a mask to protect others. Others wear a mask to protect you. And it works.

Which is just about everyone because many are asymptomatic or develop symptoms after being around others. Hence, wearing a mask protects others.

Masks definitely help.

https://www.healthaffairs.org/doi/10.13 ... 2020.00818
There is a significant decline in daily COVID-19 growth rate after mandating facial covers in public, with the effect increasing over time after signing the order. Specifically, the daily case rate declines by 0.9, 1.1, 1.4, 1.7, and 2.0 percentage-points within 1–5, 6–10, 11–15, and 16–20, and 21+ days after signing, respectively. All of these declines are statistically significant (p<0.05, or less). In contrast, the pre-trends in COVID-19 case growth rates are small and statistically insignificant.
CONCLUSION
The study provides evidence that states in the US mandating use of face masks in public had a greater decline in daily COVID-19 growth rates after issuing these mandates compared to states that did not issue mandates. These effects are observed conditional on other existing social distancing measures and are independent of the CDC recommendation to wear facial covers issued on April 3. As countries worldwide and states begin to relax social distancing restrictions and considering the high likelihood of a second COVID-19 wave in the fall/winter,30 requiring use of face masks in public might help in reducing COVID-19 spread.

Anders wrote:That is a weird take, but:

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-52015486

"Since the start of the coronavirus outbreak, the official advice from the World Health Organization has been that only two types of people should wear masks: those who are sick and show symptoms, and those who are caring for people who are suspected to have the coronavirus.

Nobody else needs to wear a mask, and experts have given several reasons for that.

One is that a mask is not seen as reliable protection as other methods, given that current research shows the virus is spread by droplets and contact with contaminated surfaces. So it could protect you, but only in certain situations such as when you're in close quarters with others where someone infected might sneeze or cough near your face. This is why experts say frequent hand washing with soap and water is far more effective.

Removing a mask requires special attention to avoid hand contamination, and it could also breed a false sense of security where you end up ignoring or forgetting to practice good hygiene."
I suppose if you're an average dumb-dumb like most Americans and think that a mask is a supersuit against coronavirus, so you go about your day as if nothing else is needed, then yeah, it's pointless. However, if you wear a mask when you have to be in public spaces, while remembering to also wash your hands, not touch your face, and maintain social distancing, it's probably helpful.
I'm trying real hard to be the shepherd.

Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick said he will no longer listen to Dr. Anthony Fauci, one of the nation’s top infectious disease experts, as coronavirus cases and hospitalizations surge in Texas.

“Fauci said today that he’s concerned about states like Texas that skipped over certain things,” Patrick told Fox News’ Laura Ingraham on Tuesday. “He doesn’t know what he’s talking about. We haven’t skipped over anything. The only thing I’m skipping over is listening to him.”

...

“He has been wrong every time on every issue,” Patrick said. “I don’t need his advice anymore.”

He didn't correct the Surgeon General on masks back in March.

I guess that's why Gov. Patrick is signing a mask requirement, huh?

He hasn't been wrong about anything necessarily but that's only because he talks out of both sides of his mouth constantly. He never commits to anything. Being a health official basically gives you permission to be wishy washy.

And it's pretty obvious they lied to us to keep us from buying up all the masks early. Maybe if our dumb fuck government wasn't so ill prepared we would have all got the correct messaging from the start.

Dan Patrick is not the governor of Texas.
