As it fades out, this track even features a tiny bit of Ed mumbling to himself under the track. Too quiet to hear what he's saying, but that stuff's been absent from PJ since Riot Act. Apparently there's a bit more on other tracks. So yay.

My first thought was jeepers creepers as well. The verse riff also sounds like a monster magnet song- unbroken hotel or something like that.

3 stars. My least favorite track of the stuff we've have till now.. i am not feelin' it.
Don't dislike anything about it, but i also don't love anything about it (cept Mike soloing).
Little above average, might be cool to hear it live though with long bluesy shred/jam at the end.

Prediction: "wakin' and bakin'" becomes a live lyric improvisation.

When I first heard this I thought it was an average PJ song - kind of like a lesser half full (huge fan of half full). However, after burning the tracks to cd and listening to it loud in the truck I gotta say this is a really fun song. I love the break down near the end and then the final solo. This is the song that has grown for me the most since I first heard them. It's just a fun blues rock song which makes me smile - and that's a good thing.

Holy crow, is this song a dump. This might be the worst song they've ever done.

I picture Eddie in a top hat and tails dancing with Carlton from "The Fresh Prince."

Good god, this is sub-Billy Joel horror. I'd rather listen to an extended mix of "Stupid Mop" for an hour.

(At least "Getaway" is good. One of their best tunes since "Binaural.")

The chorus of this song sounds like a TV show song. Can't put my finger on it.

Once again, a song that promises so much, but results in possibly the single lamest chorus I have ever heard this band create.

Slightly modified working lyrics:

LET THE RECORDS PLAY

when the kingdom comes he puts his records on and with his blistered thumb hits play
now with the volume up he goes and fills his cup and lets the drummers drum take away
the pain
the pain

breaking
forsaken
what’s that you’re taken
believing the feeling
he lets the records play

should future dim
The cigarette light’s in
the vaporizer green light grim
and when the shot glass talks he goes to listens up
until he’s nice and numb again
again

shaken
the breaking
not one for faking
the reeling is healing
he lets the records play
there’s wisdom in his ways

I’ve been down and I fell so hard and far from grace
I’ve been hurt and I still recall the flaws on her face
I’ve been off but I'm on up upon my feet
my feet again

shaken
forsaken
what’s that you’re taking
the weeding
the feeling
he lets the records play

shaken
but breaking
not one for faking
the reeling is healing
he lets the records play
there’s wisdom in his ways

Unabashedly love this song. Everything about it. That's all.
Pearl Jam is the only band I'll spend money on.

People are still calling this a failed "blues stomper", huh?

Continuing with my early morning blunt comment series:

This song stinks.
There's the dog. You can't fake that stuff. Confess with your mouth.

I like it as a glam rock hip-swinger a la T.Rex, I would like it less if I thought it was a failed blues stomper (it isn't, and I doubt Stone would say it was, though I might be wrong).

I just think Ed has to be full of *swaaaag* when he sings it, and given that he couldn't give the right performance on The Fixer, can he here?
