i've always kinda preferred gd studio vs. live. having said that, i have all the early stuff through american beauty and some 70's albums. i don't have much live, but i also don't feel like taking a deep dive in it like i did with pj (1998 - 2003 particularly). i have live in europe '72 which is really good, and a few of the dick's picks. i'm pretty content with that.

I kind of intended at the outset to go with a couple of shows here and there just to get the flavor and then fell in the deep end and now the albums are sort of a break from traversing the live shows.

It wasn't at their last show but just the fact that I got to see them play there when I'm from PA always tugs at me

If wharfrat is on blues for Allah, I didn't know that. I thought it was never released on an album. Ha! For that matter I couldn't name one song on blues for Allah except for a long pyramid one I think, and that's not the song name anyway

The only albums I could name some songs from is American Beauty & workingman's dead.

And yet I'm a huge fans and know all their songs

I just don't listen to their albums at all--except for American Beauty ... which is a good dinner album, LOL

Edit: listening to just the studio albums of the dead and not the live stuff to me is like only eating the crust off the bread. But then again I had a friend who over the course of about a year gave me 10 or 13 live shows on cassette. I'd listen to them once and throw them in a pile. Then he took me to a show. And it wasn't until after that did those cassettes become little treasures. , so I understand what you mean

I think this journey, in relation to the recent comments, has to be the most fascinating because it feels like I am in some old house with secret passageways and lost rooms where you explore and find little treasures in unexpected spots, spend more time in places you didn’t expect, and really there’s no end to this journey.

I'm pretty sure there isn't a studio "Wharf Rat" -- it was one of the songs that was intended to be presented as "new" on the 1971 'Skull and Roses' record, along with "Bertha." Same with Europe '72 -- "Tennessee Jed," "He's Gone," "Brown-Eyed Women," "Ramble On Rose," "Jack Straw," and "Mr. Charlie" all appear in their original versions on that record. Both albums contain some studio sweetening (mainly on the vocals, I think), but neither record plays up the live-studio hybrid thing like Anthem of the Sun does.

Blues for Allah is performed (I think) in its entirety on One From the Vault (8/13/75). The very first archival live Dead album, highly recommended

Europe ‘72 Vol. 22 - Lyceum Theatre, London England 5/26/72

The first thing that struck me about this show is that the sound quality from the recording is great. I mean, most of these have been good but this seems like the best of the bunch so far. The show itself is an epic throw down that just keeps going, I mean right before jumping into Me and My Uncle, the band implores the crowd to let them if they’d already played the song. There were definitely larger than life highlights for this show though that transcend the usual - the 18 minute Playing in the Band that really sold me on that song, Not Fade Away>Goin’ Down the Road Feeling Bad>Not Fade Away, and then the entire second set is just beyond great. There was plenty others that I enjoyed as well, like this Dire Wolf, Sugaree, El Paso, etc. This is just one hell of an epic show to close out this tour (note here that someday when this is over and I am on my next Dead kick I want to listen through the whole tour).

Download Series Vol. 10 - Paramount Northwest Theatre, Seattle, WA 7/21/72

This live series features nearly the full show on 7/22/72, save for the opener, and selections from the next night’s show on 7/22. Despite a few sound hiccups, the band is in great form and found an excellent groove in the middle here with particularly good versions of Stella Blue, Playing in the Band, Tennessee Jed, and a Casey Jones that was quite energetic. Cumberland Blues was also really good. Basically, what we have is a band that might be at their live height playing great shows one after another, and I am glad at this point that I am going to be hanging around 1972 for a while. This show was played without Pigpen, but still found them much in the same space.

Veneta, OR 8/27/72: The Complete Sunshine Daydream Concert

This one clocks in at the reasonable 2 hrs 56 min mark, yet packed in there is a tremendous show. This is a very spirited show with some epic versions of songs that are among the best I heard yet. What immediately stuck out to me was China Cat Sunflower, Bertha, the nearly 20 minute Playing in the Band where Garcia seems like he’s going bonkers followed by a beautiful He’s Gone, great Bird Song, an incredible Dark Star that I don’t think they sung a line from going into El Paso which was top notch. I think it was during Dark Star where Phil Lesh was just absolutely killing it - I didn’t even realize he was THAT great a bass player. I really also liked Sugar Magnolia and was thinking while it was playing “wow I really love this song”. Great show and glad it was recommended here
