The Leftovers is one of the best shows of the past 10 years.

I watched the first season a while back, and while I thought it was very good, I didn't stick with it. Picking back up the second season, it's remarkable, and if the third season stays as good as it's been through the end (which I've heard pretty much universally that it does), it's going to be one of the finest seasons of television I've ever seen. It's striking how different the show nearing its conclusion is from its start.

Though I knew it was critically-acclaimed, I also didn't know how acclaimed it was. As you said, a lot of lists have this as one of the finest (if not the finest) shows of the past decade. In terms of dramas, I'd argue The Americans is #1, but this is certainly up there.

I think particularly in the third season you can tell it's got a lot of the same creative team as Watchmen. Both shows are still very different in terms of theme, but in terms of the tone, there's definitely connecting thread there. There's a fearlessness and confidence to the storytelling that both seasons share.

I liked the book a lot and I'm not a big fan of S1.

Honestly, if you remember the book (more or less) you should just watch S1 E6 (which is absolutely phenomenal) and then the finale of S1. Then you can easily slide into S2, which is a completely different show.
