All in all, I wonder how much of my "Shit this is so over-produced" shock reaction was due to the fact that this does sound thick and layered, and Backspacer and S/T really didn't, at least by comparison.
I'm on board with you now mate - I am starting to see this record take shape from what we've heard and it's better than the last 2 at the very least, so far. Sirens and Future Days have a good chance of dragging it down but I don't think it'll be that bad. It's only real criticism is the lack of clear follow up singles to sell the record to the mindless passive music fans.

The one problem I have with this song is that warbley sixties thing that happens. Other than that, no problems at all really.

I do wish this song didn't have the chorus it does. It's quite nice up to there, then splat.

I think it's crystallized for me in the past few months, I guess just from a geeky songwriting perspective, that one of my pet peeves with PJ on the past few records is not knowing how to make the progressions from one part into another flow well.

This is true.

Edit: the only consolation for me is that the "chorus" isn't trying to be the biggest part of the song; the last verse is.

If BO'B had added those "doo-doo doos" to Black, we'd be really pissed off at him.

I much prefer "Eh-yeah! Eh-yeah!" on the end of this, to "Yeah Yeah! Yeah Yeah!", what we got at Wrigley.

I like the shimmery way he sings lightning bolt. Still don't like this as an album title but I'm okay with it as a song now. She's a lightning bolt is a significant improvement over just singing lightning bolt

And I still love how the rhythm of "Lightning Bolt" is sung over the groove. It's tight. I can imagine Ed sang it right on the bar and then Matt said no, sing it slightly behind each time... groooovier.

Edit: but he fucked it up at Wrigley. Wonder if he'll get it right next time.

remember the 'will the studio make a song a little better or do you basically know what you're getting conversation that we spent the first 35 pages of this thread talking about?

i seemed to like it, but nothing in my initial posts would come close to leading me to believe that I would come to prefer this to MYM, or that it might very well become a top tier pearl jam song.

Still too early to say that with certainty, obviously, but this is a case of a studio version pushing a song up by at least a full point in my estimation.

I'll try and illustrate it...

On the first one, the "B" of "Boooolt" falls on the first beat of the chorus bar. But the second one doesn't. Imagine the x's here are beats of the bar, and when "o" becomes "w" the note has risen slightly. It goes:

Lightning booooooowwwwwwwlt
....................X.....X.....X.....X

And then the next ones come in just as early each time.

Yep.

And I've felt pretty smug since we found out I was right... I just haven't wanted to rub it in.
