Re: Swallowed Whole
The first 3 records. I confess I don't recall much beyond the hits, but songs like rain king, potter, this desert life, and a long December remain in fairly regular rotation. This desert life was my favorite. I quite liked them in small doses bit a full album was a lot.harmless wrote:How much CC have you heard, Stip?stip wrote:Mrs. Potters lullaby is a really good song

People always talk about songs being "Dylanesque," but I think this** is one of the most truly authentic "Dylanesque" songs I've ever heard. I'm not sure if it's what they were going for but they really managed to capture it.stip wrote:Mrs. Potters lullaby is a really good song
**Another one is "Damn, Sam (I Love a Woman That Rains)" by Ryan Adams.

Yeah, it's sometimes a bit faux-intellectual. Guilty pleasure of mine, the pretentious lyrics.stip wrote:I think he tends to overwrite but there is a ramshackle majesty to that song

Re: Swallowed Whole
But really, every single CC record is great. Their most recent covers album is a bit boring, but it's covers so that's OK. 'Saturday Nights and Sunday Mornings' was the last studio album and it's pretty damn good. Double album.

I really like some of the transitions from verse to chorus in this song. Transitions at 1:45 at 3:33 are quite cool.

i usually don't. Like with punk and some other genres/styles I may like it when PJ does it because the parts of the genre I don't care for will usually have their excess softened.harmless wrote:If you like the bright, 'poppy' side of music, Counting Crows' 'Hard Candy' is what I wanted Backspacer to be, and what Lightning Bolt may end up being closer to...stip wrote:The first 3 records. Re: Swallowed Whole
I thought this song sounded very Pearl Jam, and not at all like REM. The vocal delivery and music in the first half of the song do remind me a bit of Into the Wild and the second half with the bigger stretching and jamming a sort of No Code musical flexibility. Yet very much them in a different modern sense. It's smart enough not to recall old PJ completely but not so different as to feel unnatural for them. In other words, it's fantastic.

Spun it five times since Friday. I don't think I will listen to this song again.

Re: Swallowed Whole
Working Lyrics one minor change.
SWALLOWED WHOLE
I can feel the dawn, I can feel the earth
I can feel the living all around…
I can choose a path, I can choose a word
I can start the healing, Bring it now…
Whispered songs inside the wind
Breathing in forgiveness
Like vibrations with no end
Hear the planet humming
What is clear far from the noise, gets swallowed whole
I can feel the sun, I can see the sound
I can set myself right hear and drown…
I can feel the rush, I could clear the clouds
I could set the needles spinning love/loud…
I can hear the crash, I can feel the pound
I can feel the current pulling down…
Whispered songs inside the wind
Breathing in forgiveness
Like vibrations with no end
Feel the planet humming
What is clear far from the noise, gets swallowed whole
With no quiet to be found
spirit lifted off the ground
and what lies beyond the grave
might be welcomed change
And will come, come what may
with no rest in peace
Until that day
I could choose a path, I could choose the word
I could start the healing, Bring it now…
I could be the sun, I could be the sound
I could set myself right here and drown...
Whispered songs inside the wind
Breathing in forgiveness
And the chapter I’ve not read

Don't particularly like the way it starts but then it really picks up. Ed's voice again soars in the high parts, ace job. The solo by Mike is also good. Probably the one I like the least out of the four but still very good.
Pearl Jam is the only band I'll spend money on.

This song really reminds me of Vs., 'Daughter' or something, in some ways. Maybe it's the guitar tone.

Re: Swallowed Whole
Actually, it's partly to do with the fact that electric and acoustic guitar are both prominent, contributing to the song's fullness. They haven't done that in a while.

Re: Swallowed Whole
"And what lies beyond the grave
Might be welcome shade (change?).
And we'll come, come what may,
With no rest in peace until that day."
I love how this sounds pretty much like an eschatological hymn, but instead of being about how "the faithful" will reach heaven and be rewarded, it looks to everything being over and us all being dead.

Re: Swallowed Whole
This song has top 10 potential.
MYM, Getaway and Swallowed Whole have already met my ideal expectations for this album.
