I said 75% of white people were faking it. You could easily fall within the 25% who genuinely like it.durdencommatyler wrote:I think it's pretty shitty to accuse others if liking something -- in fact, of being incapable of liking something -- just because you didn't like it.B wrote:Correct.durdencommatyler wrote:You respect the art, yet think others who respect it are liars.
My Facebook friends that gush over how much they love this musical are totally full of shit.
I think Hamilton is the greatest piece of U.S. art created in the last 25 years. Am I a liar?

You're taking my broad generalization very personally, durds.

Well, I still think a lot of people are faking their enthusiasm.

Other than the rotating stage, I didn't find anything too remarkable. Might be one of those things that works much better in person.durdencommatyler wrote:The staging is spectacular.Monkey_Driven wrote:As a stage show I don't find it particularly noteworthy, but the music really is incredible.

You've only seen the film?Monkey_Driven wrote:Other than the rotating stage, I didn't find anything too remarkable. The dancing and physical moment/use of space is striking. There is so much storytelling go on in the ensemble. One of my favorite repeated pieces is Hamilton's mother in the hurricane. That dancer, that move is used to gut wrenching effect. Andy Blankenbuehler is a genius in his own right. I wish the film could capture what he's done with the piece. It really is masterful.
The way sound and lights are used is also topnotch and expert. The seamless movement through time and story is breathtaking.
Hearing Leslie Odom recount seeing an early workshop of Hamilton (before he was cast as Burr) and crying in his seat at the sight of four men of color standing together on stage, singing, communing, bonding, is another thing about the piece/staging that can't be over looked either. Almost every aspect of the show is remarkable and noteworthy. This thing broke barriers in a lot of ways. It's important not to overlook that in the context of the whole piece.
Or maybe I'm lying! We'll never know for sure.

I've only seen the film as I do not want to spend $300+ to see anything live.

Re: Hamilton
Oh totally fair. I bought house seats back when they were $169 a piece. It's still the most I've ever paid to see a Broadway show and I think it was 100% worth it. But it hurt to spend that kind of money.Monkey_Driven wrote:I've only seen the film as I do not want to spend $300+ to see anything live.

Re: Hamilton
I understand why the film is cut the way it is. It's a film! But I do wish it showed more of the unique staging and movement. I almost wish it was mostly wide shots of the whole space and less cutting and close-ups. You really don't get a feel for how grand and unique the full stage show is in the film.

Not to get off topic, but I'm really struggling to remember if I've ever heard an Imagine Dragons song outside of a car commercial.

Ah. I only play Madden and I always have the sound off. I like to spin records while I play.

I understand B's impulse to call people liars for liking a thing he doesn't (I have a secret belief that nobody actually likes dark chocolate) but I am truly baffled by the fact that he found it hard to follow. I think if anything the show (which I love) can be criticized for being a bit didactic

I have a visceral reaction to advertising and promotion. There's just something about salesmanship that grates on me on a very base level and I react very negatively towards it. I want those people to suffer and I want their enterprises to fail.
