I think there's a difference between, in the context of baseball, everyone knows who you're referring to and the first name being a standard way of referring to that person.
"I honestly forgot Nomar even played for the A's."
"Did you ever see the clip of Vlad hitting a double off the pitch that bounced in front of home plate?"
"Manny diving to cut-off that Damon throw makes me laugh every time I see it."
vs.
"Babe calling his shot is an iconic moment."
"I visited Babe's grave the last time I travelled to New York."
It sounds kind of weird. "Babe Ruth" sounds more natural in both cases, where Garciaparra, Guerrero, and Ramirez are extraneous in the above examples.

It's "The Babe," not "Babe."

Also, I feel like he is much more commonly called simply "Ruth" outside of The Sandlot.

Also, "Babe" itself is a nickname, not his first name, if we're being pedantic. But so is "Mookie."

Clearly the best example. At his peak of popularity, if you were in Japan, you could drop a piece of mail in the box, and simply put "Ichiro" on it, and they would deliver it to him. He was right up there with Elvis, Madonna, Cher, other 1 name celebs.

But baseball is also the sport where players get called by their nicknames just as much as their names
Joltin Joe, Splendid Splinter, Hammerin Hank, The Babe, Mr October, The Ignitor, The Rocket, The Big Unit, Maddog, Mr Padre, Stan the Man, The Ryan Express, Satch, Mr Cub, The Big Train, the list just goes on and on

I've never called him Ruth, its always Babe/The Babe.
