Let's be sure to mark this with a big ol' "IN OUR OPINION", otherwise the Lightning Bolt fans will start saying we're mindlessly naysaying and calling everyone idiots.

I have a feeling that once we hear this entire record, we're going to realize that it's the album Backspacer was supposed to be--the "fun" album. I have a feeling Lightning Bolt is going to be a lot more "fun," which is maybe what some of us truly miss about Pearl Jam...that something that set the first few albums apart in our collective consciousness...point being, this album might truly be the one that gets people "back into Pearl Jam."

Hey, Binaural and Riot Act are at least the last consistently good Pearl Jam records.cutuphalfdead wrote:Oh shut up.Birds in Hell wrote:*cough*cutuphalfdead wrote:Riot Act, the last great Pearl Jam record.

Well, in the sense that everybody knew all of those riffs and the lyrical melodies. I guess anthemic is more of the word I'm looking for. I feel like the production on this is pretty clear too. These are shitty rips, and I can hear a lot more depth to the instrumentation.

I've always loved Riot Act, but this last listen it clicked for me better than ever. 4/5 stars, strong.Birds in Hell wrote:Hey, Binaural and Riot Act are at least the last consistently good Pearl Jam records.cutuphalfdead wrote:Oh shut up.Birds in Hell wrote:*cough*cutuphalfdead wrote:Riot Act, the last great Pearl Jam record.

Self Titled was Top 10 albums of 2006 in Rolling Stone and received 4 or 5 star ratings in various publications.digster wrote:I do remember pretty clearly that Backspacer and S/T had positive reactions overall, the latter very much in particular. That kind of got rave reviews in the immediacy after it's release. Backspacer's response was a bit more measured when it came to the album; The Fixer, on the other hand, I remember having a very mixed reaction (with it getting heated at points).ABNorman wrote:I really wish we still had archives of the old board so we could see reactions to Self-Titled and Backspacer (rather than just peoples' memories).

For me, the songs on s/t are all great, but the album isn't because the sound is too harshinjuddstree wrote:Self Titled was Top 10 albums of 2006 in Rolling Stone and received 4 or 5 star ratings in various publications.digster wrote:I do remember pretty clearly that Backspacer and S/T had positive reactions overall, the latter very much in particular. I'd like to see the rest of that list.injuddstree wrote:Self Titled was Top 10 albums of 2006 in Rolling Stone and received 4 or 5 star ratings in various publications.digster wrote:I do remember pretty clearly that Backspacer and S/T had positive reactions overall, the latter very much in particular. I've always wondered *why* the S/T record sounds like that. Adam Kasper did a great job with the production on Riot Act, but the ol' Avocado does not sound warm at all. Who mixed and mastered those two albums? BoB mixed RA, right?
