Gave man two brains but only enough blood to run one at a time.

That's what I took him to be saying.
Also, I feel there's a parallel between the "different brains" (speaking of gender) and "making love like the lizards", because some lizards (like the Mourning Gecko) are "parthenogenetic", meaning they can change sex and fertilise their own eggs. So, sex and gender, maybe Ed is alluding to the several genders humans in fact have, and also the fact that the"male" and "female" binary is inessential for love to take place.

And Kevin Davis needs to consider this stuff too.

My old band friends (we were all very heavily inspired by PJ back in the day) are going to mostly hate it, except for MYM.

sony don't have the rights to just breathe and fixer, though. i suppose pearl jam could sign it over for this one. i'd like to see this done right, there's a lot of pretty cool essentials out there.
So this is a Sony release? I wonder how much input the band has then?

Riot act is most definitely the album I do not want to see reprised, although there are still things there worth reproducing

Riot Act is their most dour record along with Binaural, for me. I am not a fan of No Code either but I still find it more listenable all the way through. All three have some gems, as does every PJ album. But man, I would not want a reprisal of either in the remaining LB songs. I would much prefer the moody and atmospheric songs to be something akin to say, Immortality rather than Sleight of Hand. Now that's how you do moody and atmospheric.

yeah, the article says it's being released on the "legacy" label, which is sony.

If you were trying to get people back into pearl jam it wouldn't be with this poppy happy whatever, its almost the opposite of the albums that people consider 'the good ones' . In fact they're pretty much turning into the overproduced faux grunge credentials band people used to call em back.in the day when they were slagging them off. Of course at this point in thier career.they've earned the right to do whatever the fuck they want. I'm loosing my own point here but I don't think the people that jumped off the train years ago were waiting for lightning bolt(the song) to bring them back. I think, I'm probably wrong though since I'm not one of them so whatever.

I predict that if like that alternativenation review was right and this album is half awesome half meh, I'm still going to be hanging around for no.11 the 'logical extension of lightning bolt' that's two-parts awesome. Damn them.

Yeah, to be honest although I love the new stuff I'm fairly sure it's not what the old-garde have always been waiting for. They want anything from Yield and before back. Even the naysayers who love Binaural and Riot Act are, on the whole, still here and hoping PJ get their act together. They still care, marginally. The people who escaped the PJ radar completely? Not in a million years I don't think.

Pearl Jam at the height of their popularity wrote songs with hooks aplenty. These LB songs are no less or no more 'pop' sounding that their biggest hits from Ten and Vs. Alive, Evenflow, Jeremy, Once, Daughter, Animal, etc. are all songs with catchy melodies and sing-along choruses/verses. You can argue all you want that they had more edge or whatever back then, but there is no changing the fact that they wrote hugely anthemic and 'pop' sounding tunes even back in the day.

A huge part of PJ's early commercial success was hooky songwriting, aside of course from the fact that they were and still are extremely competent musicians. The departure from this type of songwriting to more plodding, meandering songs in the middle period may have satisfied the cult following that the band had developed but it alienated the mainstream. Whatever their intentions are now by returning to the songwriting style that made them a great band in the first place can be argued to death. But I for one am not complaining. This is what they do best. Sprinkle in some moody ballads ala Immortality or Indifference (as opposed to Sleight of Hand or Nothing As It Seems) and you get everything that I (and many people outside of RM) love about PJ.

With huge walls of distorted guitar and an angry Ed able to reach a high register with unrivalled power. They were "alternative", even if that's just a commercial label to sell CDs. This isn't.

Which is not to do it down, of course, because again, I like it. But we can't say these are "the same catchy songs" when they have a grain of the same but they're not in the same ballpark and wouldn't be called "alternative" at any stretch, imo. They're good rock music. But you're right, if they can give us some more alternative moody stuff as well on the album... we may be in for a very good album indeed and one which is slightly more reflective of their old, great stuff (which includes Riot Act and Binaural for me).

For real, it's not even a question. Sure, the new stuff is more commercially appealing than Riot Act/Binaural (people want entertainement more than anything else), but it has nothing to do with the early albums. As our new friend would say, it lacks "balls".

There's the difference, right there. People on here still seem to want that. And you know, I wouldn't mind it either. The only thing that really made them alternative was Ed's angsty lyrics and delivery, IMO. You can distort the guitars all you want on these new songs or on Backspacer but people still wouldn't consider them alternative anymore. They still wouldn't have the 'balls' that people seem to be missing, not without that same old Ed. He's not singing about personal loss, pain or railing against anything as overtly as he was. He has become 'wiser' and PJ are now more about observation of the world around them (through Ed's eyes), sarcastic social commentary and maybe some of Ed's wisdom which he's gained through all those years of angsty rebellion. It doesn't make for the sort of 'spectacle' that were the first three albums. And you can make an argument that those early songs can't be matched because of this very fact. But I would take what we are getting with LB any day over everything they did from No Code-Riot Act.

The songwriting has everything to do with the early albums. The happy, uplifting music combined with dark/serious/sarcastic lyrics is a PJ trademark. Not something they invented but something they used extensively in writing their best songs.

Those (us trolls) who want more of the middle period stuff definitely don't seem to care much about angry Ed. That's more for the S/T aficionados.

I would agree with everything here except for the last sentence. I love those albums, but I'm one of those strange fuckers that likes almost everything by PJ, to some extent. The weak spots were S/T and Backspacer. I agree that they sometimes achieve the exact right tone for their image and lyrical content now, and I think they've achieved that here. So on its own terms, I really hope this album is a success. At the moment, it feels a little like *this* is the album they should've made coming off Riot Act, and that's really all I wanted.
