I like this reviewer's analysis:
After Walt abducts baby Holly, the Whites' house is crawling with cops, but he calls home anyway, and lays into Skyler as we've never heard him before. In plot terms, it makes the most sense to assume that the call is more for the policemen Walt must know are listening than it is for Skyler, painting a fraudulent picture of her as a woman held in check by the threat of bodily harm who never understood the extent of Walt's criminality. But the way Bryan Cranston and Anna Gunn play the exchange, there's plenty of reality to it as well. Would Walt really threaten Skyler with death? Probably not. Does he feel she held him back, that she never fully understood or supported him, that he could have been a great man were it not for her? Without a single doubt. There's a killing irony in the idea that Walter White comes closest to telling the truth when he's engaged in a lie.
And when Skyler answers, "I'm sorry." While saving her he still revealed how he really thought of their marriage.

This shit brings me to tears.

What was Jesse saying to Todd in that holding cell? Something about Jesse's confession tape probably?

"I told you it's at his (Hank's) house."

Is that what he said?

well, there's one step closer to this happening. looks like it's up to jesse to save us all.

I took that to mean Jesse's confession tape as well

The moment where Walt starts the car in the desert even though the keys are buried with Gomez where the money used to be is one of the darkest joke-metaphors in the series. Great stuff.

I agree this could have been the best episode of the series.

Well everything sure went to shit in a big way.

I'm guessing the flash-forward at the start of episode 8 with Walt getting some weapons in that diner is definitely leading to a bigger than all hell showdown with the Brotherhood in the last episode.

So, does anyone remember if the car Walt had during the diner scene was the same one he pulled up in front of his house in episode 8?

Wow, what a powerful episode. It actually kept me up for a while last night. I really think the gun walt has is now for the nazi's the bigger question is what will he do with Jesse when he finds him there?

I think it will be rescue, not kill. Somehow he will learn that "blue sky" is back on the market, maybe Lydia gets arrested her corporation's ties are revealed, and Walt realizes the Aryans must be keeping Jesse alive to cook. Having forever lost his real son, he goes to save his surrogate one.

theplatypus wrote:What an astounding episode. Pitch perfect. Everything I love about the show, compacted and intensified to a piercing degree. Tragic, solemn, sickeningly clever, darkly humorous, sustaining a level of tension to the point of physical discomfort. Every act break was a crushing blow, every left turn a sly reminder that this show can defy even the most savvy viewer's expectations. The direction was right on par with the writing, loaded with symbolism and eye candy; with one very minor exception (Skyler's superfluous, crassly-ADR'd "whose truck is that?") every line reading packed a prodigious wallop. On first viewing, this could be the single greatest episode of the show. Even Hollie deserves a fucking Emmy.
Right on. Cranston's performance in this episode is devastating. And the whole rolling-the-barrel-through-the-desert bit was like a Sisyphean drug trip through purgatory.

From one of the recappers online:

Gale - problem dog
Jesse - rabid dog
Walt - the stray dog shown at the end of the episode

Didn't pick up on that last night, but a cool little element.
