I worry that people are drastically underestimating how bad things could get if this stimulus isn’t resolved.

Please define the apocalypse should the stimulus not pass or be a week or two late.

Americans owe a record shattering $21.5 billion in mostly-newly acquired rent debt. Food banks have been feeding over 5 million families weekly *during the period when the stimulus was active.* States expect it to take a month or longer after a bill is passed for people to begin seeing stimulus checks again, and say that the down time may double if they have to rework their system for new approaches (ie the “80% of income” idea Republicans are floating). If they were to work a bill tomorrow, half of all families receiving assistance will have gone 2 months without before it’s all up and fully running again.

During that same time frame, 24 states that represent nearly 65% of all unemployment claims will cease to have moratoriums on evictions.

I dunno man but sounds like a really bad way to kick off the hottest part of the year.

Do you really think there is about to millions of evictions? Are there millions of people just waiting for those apartments? Will the landlords risk the blowback from kicking people out now?

I don’t understand why you would want to frame the A/B as “millions of evictions” or “nothingburger.” There are so many, many possible consequences to that many American families becoming that financially insecure. Food banks can’t keep up as it is. Our homeless support service network sags under normal conditions, which is 500,000 US homeless. Even 100,000 people added to that would become unmanageable. It wouldn’t take millions. Not even close.

In fact, it doesn’t even take evictions. A million families have fallen behind on their electric, water and sewage bills in **North Carolina alone.** In Elizabeth City, 2,500 residents were delinquent on their electric bills in June. That money is often crucial to maintaining local services, especially in smaller communities.

So I don’t think it takes millions of evictions to become an unnecessary tragedy (though I also think, if evictions at any scale aren’t a realistic concern...why did congress even feel the need to pass a moratorium?). The difference between no evictions and, say, 200,000 evictions is tremendous. The difference between 5 million food insecure families and 10 million insecure families is alarming. The difference between 2,500 Elizabeth City residents not paying their utility bills and 4,000 Elizabeth City residents not paying utility bills is directly consequential to that community.

It doesn’t seem to me to take any thought at all to recognize that this is a tenuous situation. I badly hope for the best, which is that a reasonable support bill is passed very, very soon. But not a lot about this year leaves me confident that will happen, and I unapologetically worry for people caught in the crosshairs.

if it's anything like the 2008 mortgage crisis, there might not be enough court orders / cops to evict people for a while - and people could just end up sitting in their apartment for 18 months not paying rent before its time to actually get out

although i guess in the case of an apartment, the landlord could just attempt to change the locks

Just to echo McP here, I posted this earlier in the thread but it may have been overlooked by all the threats of anal sex:

I would argue that if the rent/eviction crisis isn't averted, things could get very bad very quickly--per the estimate of CNBC, anywhere from 1/5 to 1/2 of all renters will face eviction this year. Maybe that number's off--I honestly can't say--or maybe the states work something out on there own, but taking that report at face value paints a picture of a wave of mass unrest that's looming, and that probably won't be solved by another $1200 check.

Again--I have no idea if those numbers are legitimate, and certainly I think Bi_3 is right to suggest that not EVERY landlord is going to (or going to be able to, because of eviction freezes and a lack of enforcement) put people on the streets. But I also think there's a middle ground where we can acknowledge that housing insecurity is not decoupled from food insecurity, from loan default, from unpaid utilities, etc.
