Season Four is amazing. It's easily the best season of the series. Definitely watch that one. And then, yeah, you can bail.Mickey wrote:Really? That's S4, so maybe I'll give it until then.tragabigzanda wrote:Whichever one has Jonathan lithgow, that’s the best season and it’s all useless after thenMickey wrote:Just started Dexter, with my wife's advisory not to go beyond S3.

Im starting S4 of Mad Men, and while i enjoy it, i dont think this series is brilliant. Sometimes it has the worst elements of a soap opera. And visually, its just standard.
Having said that, i like it. It reminds me of my time in a ad agency too. And the cast is good.

I don't understand this at all. I'm convinced you're watching the wrong show.VinylGuy wrote:Im starting S4 of Mad Men, and while i enjoy it, i dont think this series is brilliant. Sometimes it has the worst elements of a soap opera. And visually, its just standard.

Well, of course as a serialized tv show, there are going to need any kind of cliffhangers of sorts. But Peggy being pregnant at the end of season 1 was poorly handled. Don´s brother committing suicide with him reaching out just after seemed something out of Grey´s Anatomy.durdencommatyler wrote:I don't understand this at all. Visually its just regular old tv. Great art and wardrobe but they function as sets. Nothing dramatic about them. The settings, the framing, even camera angulations are basic.
I still found it enjoyable and im on season 4 so the show grabbed me.

Oh boy, Difficult People Ep 1 was a struggle to get through. How did this show get a full series let alone 3 seasons.

We bailed on it pretty early. I don't even really remember much about what I did see, which was maybe half of S1?LetMeSleep wrote:Oh boy, Difficult People Ep 1 was a struggle to get through. How did this show get a full series let alone 3 seasons.

Re: What are you currently watching on TV?
There's nothing very ordinary or standard about the show to me. Comparing any of it to something as sloppy and formulaic as a soap opera just doesn't compute to me at all. And it's stunning visually. The art direction is some of the finest I've ever seen on television. All components combine to create such a tense and unsettling experience for a show that's such a deliberate slow burn. The pace, the look, the plotting, the structure... I just can't think of any aspect of the show that's "ordinary" or even traditional. It seems to break every convention and still excel where so many other shows fail. To me, the thing is a masterclass in every category.VinylGuy wrote:whats your take?durdencommatyler wrote:I'm glad you're enjoying it. But we watched different shows.
But I also watched it in real time. So perhaps my impression would be different watching it now, so many years after the fact. Maybe it isn't as stunning today because of the things that have come since. Perhaps it looks dated and flat now in that context. That kind of thing is always hard to gauge. But at the time, there was nothing like it, and it was incredibly cinematic for a TV show.

I'm just so glad you're watching it now. Even if we have different experiences with it, I think it's an important show and I'm happy that there are things about it that grip you and draw you in. That's super cool. And it must be weird watching it after having worked at an ad agency. That's got to be a very different experience.

It is a very cool experience and made me think a lot about those years. They nailed a lot of the tone of whats to work there for sure.durdencommatyler wrote:I'm just so glad you're watching it now. I enjoyed Mad Men more than Breaking Bad at the time they aired. Wonder how I would feel now.

Mad Men is the best television show of all-time and I seriously doubt that anything will ever be better
