Did Portland Police have any issues before this? Were the people of Portland constantly complaining about how their police department was conducting business, and it just never hit the national radar?
this is what portland looked like before it had police officers:

I can't read the headline before the paywall blocks my view, but I assume it's something like this?
Portland sees peaceful night of protests following withdrawal of federal troops

Yes, exactly that:
Some in the crowd worked to avoid trouble by stopping demonstrators from lighting fires and shooting fireworks at the courthouse as they had done on previous nights.
Dan Thomas, an African American man, stood in the street shouting at people not to cause a confrontation with the state police.

“Attacking the federal building is not Black Lives Matter. Leave it alone. You’re playing into Trump’s hands,” he said.

One woman shouted: “Stupid ass white people only here for their own reasons.”
Sounds like the lilly ass brats finally got the message about their bullshit.

What could have been a small scale problem involving isolated groups of purists now involves moms and dads and the mayor and the world.

Heck of a job. This clearly was the smartest response. You sure look tough, and not at all like every other wimpy bully wannabe who gets publicly owned.

I will continue to be more judgmental of the actions of a taxpayer-funded, heavily-regimented, paid military force than I am of the actions of a spontaneous, decentralized group of protesters. Nothing in this thread has moved that needle in my head one iota.

After I posed the question I was looking up Portland history and saw some of the issues it had. Beforehand Portland was just the home of the Trailblazers and on the left side of the country.

Though I may not be here with you, I urge you to answer the highest calling of your heart and stand up for what you truly believe. In my life I have done all I can to demonstrate that the way of peace, the way of love and nonviolence is the more excellent way. Now it is your turn to let freedom ring.

Why would this decision not also apply to private individuals live streaming? No expectation of privacy in public, so why does it matter who is livestreaming?

It's the easiest way to reduce crime: eliminate evidence it ever happened

This seems like a mistake. I mean, it's distinctly different than police usage of "Ring" units in neighborhoods, which is what I'm thinking is the parrellel the ACLU is drawing.

Didnt the ACLU recently say they were putting antiracism over civil liberties? Something like they would no longer defend hate speech?
