It may well be, but whether or not you like it (I do), the thesis that "they used to be more intelligent but nothing here is except for MYM" is bollocks.

Except it's Robert Plants melody that was later borrowed by Steven Tyler and now by Ed
Well thank God I haven't heard these other songs ... And maybe Ed hasn't either? :)
Pearl Jam have never borrowed anything before, I can't believe it's starting now, it makes me so mad! :gomez:

this is definitely towards the bottom of the new songs for me. I just can't get into attacks on religious fundamentalism without some larger point beyond 'i don't want to believe what you believe'. MYM has that. I'm not convinced getaway does yet. But I also haven't sat down to really dissect any of these songs yet. I'm still learning how they feel.

You and I should talk about the depth of this song at some point, Stip. Maybe we should have a lyrics thread for every song when the new album comes out (or just one for all the songs). I think it's more about affirming self-reliance and independence of thought, than attacking religion as such. "And if you want to have to pray, it's alright...", but it's not my way. I have a faith of some kind myself, and the line "But I've found my place, and it's alright" is really speaking to me.

could be. And yes, let's do. I don't want to look too deeply at lyrics until we have liner notes because I don't want to construct a meaning for a song around a lyric I misheard.

It depends on where you come from. I'm from a very religious part of the UK and am sick of being instructed on matters spiritual by all and sundry.

Me too. I follow a Christian faith but I rarely call myself a Christian anymore. At best, I'm a post-Evangelical / progressive Christian. At worst I'm a nothing, agnostic. I'm absolutely down with the anger at hypocrisy these songs have. I wish it still didn't need saying, but it does.

Upgraded to 5. There is nothing about this song I don't like:

Lyrics are great
Melody is catchy
Ed is in a sweet spot range vocally
The guitars have a great interaction
Drums and bass are raw as fuck
It's a great tempo
Groove and energy

I want to shake my booty to it.
There's the dog. You can't fake that stuff. Confess with your mouth.

I agree with everything you wrote, but there's something missing that keeps it out of 5 star territory for me. It a solid 4 for me though.

I guess I should have posted this here instead of the 'lightning bolt' thread...

Long time lurker and I use to post here back in the day before having to resurrect my old username.

From this standpoint, 'Getaway' is the best song this group has done in years. They sound young, vibrant, and from these ears, it's one helluva catchy tune. Based on the collection of songs that have leaked, this has the potential to be a really, really good album.

 Pretty much how I feel, too. I've already been shaking my money maker to it.

this is how i feel as well. Getaway is catchy and a good sing along. I like the lyrics and generally agree with them.

Swallowed is such a builder of a song. it just keeps going up.. I feel this is a grower for me :P

Lightning Bolt would almost be better if was a lil faster in my opinion. and LTRP must be fun for them.. I don't despise it but i don't get it yet.

I think I would have to look into the lyrics a bit more (and, like Stip said, have some liner notes so we're not guessing too much) but the "It's alright" lines seem at odds with some of the anti-religious imagery he uses. It's like he's saying "Hey, we can all believe whatever we want... but what you believe is stupid."

Having said that, I don't mind it because I pretty much agree with him.

It's a response to a question:

"Do you want to hear about Jesus?"

"No, it's alright, it's OK, I've got my own way..."

It's not malicious, it's just a "No thanks, I'm fine."

I maintain that it feels petulant--not malicious, necessarily (though it's not above getting a shot in at the "holy rollers"), just preoccupied with calling undue attention to the singer's capacity to think for himself, something this singer has long since established. "Mine is mine"; "I've got my own way..."; "I found my place"--yeah, great, you've found your place, you and every unwashed, insecure teenager in an Insane Clown Posse t-shirt. What of it?

I can see exactly what you're saying, but I just like how the lyrics are achieving this. The sentiment underneath may not be deep, but the humour and attitude (I think) makes up for it. The song doesn't need to be *about* anything deeper because I enjoy the word-play, etc. Would you say any of these songs' lyrics are doing anything on a deeper level? I would say no, because they're not designed to, but I think their success is in the execution more than the sentiment. This is definitely not middle-period songwriting. I don't find much of the early lyric-writing very clever either, though.
