I tend to think the remaining NRA members are the absolute stalwarts. I had no fewer than 4 dues-paying members in my family as late as Obama’s first term. I don’t believe that I have any now. It just seems (from apocryphal experience mixed with the last four years of headlines) like the organization’s reputation as the ACLU of gun rights deteriorated...especially among its core constituency...at the same time that they repeatedly hiked fees. The fact that this lawsuit is over misuse of funds isn’t going to help.

Re: Election 2020
I'm looking at it more from the narrative that will be created that this is another step toward chipping away at gun rights. and if it happens on trump's watch, what does the prospect of a biden presidency look like? it's not the people who are currently members of the nra, but rather those that are one or two-issue voters that would've otherwise been apathetic come november and not voted now coming out in greater numbers.McParadigm wrote:You have to take the number at face value, because they adamantly refuse to demonstrate its accuracy.tragabigzanda wrote:Yeah, and regardless of the extent to which this is snark, there are some that probably have been thinking of voting Biden, as other more immediate concerns have taken over their lives. Apparently the NRA is the only game in town when it comes to insurance and lead remediation for gun ranges. If the NY AG succeeds, say goodbye to your local range.Chris_H_2 wrote:So this New York AG's lawsuit against the NRA can't be good for democrats this election, right?

B. There won’t be a mass closing of gun ranges if the NRA disappears.
C. If there were, the inability of ranges to function without them would demonstrate an existing problem rather than a net positive for the NRA.
D. I’d personally love to say goodbye to my local range though thx.

But point D, I dunno... I won't miss them myself, but they do probably provide an outlet for some who need one.

Maybe, but points A-C are about the state of the issue at hand, while point D is about my personal feelings on the matter.Rob wrote:I love your Point C.McParadigm wrote:A. A-C : are there other insurers that are uniquely situated to resist pressure campaigns? NY previously went after the NRA for offering concealed carry insurance. Is there anything preventing them from limiting the ability of insurers to offer liability policies for gun ranges?McParadigm wrote:A. By “went after the NRA for offering concealed carry insurance,“ are you referring to the time they went after the NRA for offering insurance while not having a license to conduct insurance business in New York?

*Not having a license to market insurance in New York. Tellingly, NY only went after their underwrriter and administrator for fines and assurances that they would not work with the NRA further. Not at all selective prosecution.McParadigm wrote:By “went after the NRA for offering concealed carry insurance,“ are you referring to the time they went after the NRA for offering insurance while not having a license to conduct insurance business in New York?
Superior products are available elsewhere, so it seems like an unnecessary self inflicted wound to some extent.
But sure, ignore the whole inevitable pressure campaigns/ lawfare that will make it difficult to continue operating public ranges.
Its cool, I'll just keep depositing lead on BLM land. This is far preferrable.

I meant as in open to the public, as opposed to someone just digging up a berm and shooting in their back yard.tragabigzanda wrote:Am I crazy for thinking that public ranges are a rarity, and almost all gun clubs are private?simple schoolboy wrote:*Not having a license to market insurance in New York. And do private ranges have increased ability to afford better insurance because of member dues?
I'm not suggesting anything here. My gun range experiences as a kid were at a private range; I've only ever known of private ranges in other places I've lived. And then the only public range I've stepped foot on is in an unincorporated part of MT, most likely (though I couldn't say for sure) on private land that had granted some sort of easement for public firing use.

Its almost like there are forseeable outcomes of closing local ranges (where you can actually do lead abatement).Mickey wrote:Very cool!simple schoolboy wrote:*Not having a license to market insurance in New York. Yes we must accommodate the human compulsion to litter on public land.

Is it embezzlement if the board knows about it and approves it?Chris_H_2 wrote:there's a lot of bad stuff thrown against the executives of the NRA. i'm curious why there are no criminal charges.

yes. the board may know about it (which make them co-conspirators), but the contributors don't. and it's also fraud if they don't disclose it (and more than likely tax evasion).simple schoolboy wrote:Is it embezzlement if the board knows about it and approves it?Chris_H_2 wrote:there's a lot of bad stuff thrown against the executives of the NRA. i'm curious why there are no criminal charges.
