There's a massive range of possibilities between "belief in nothing" and organized religion.

'admitted', as if it is some kind of crime ;). But there is God in many Pearl Jam songs already, even the word. That is what I like about MYM, that he sings about catching himself thinking he needed God. If that is not 'proof' of it slipping into his mind, what else?

Indeed. Belief in nothing is nihilism, not atheism.

oh it sounds so good there. Same at the end of MYM. It is a great exclamation point. I can see being turned off if it is the entire song (ala johnny guitar, for instance)

To be fair it's just the "thoughts will soon arrIIIIIIVE" part that's grating me at the moment. I like the concept, just don't think it's "in his register" any more. Maybe I'd have preferred a more conservative delivery of that part on record and wouldn't have minded if he wanted to put his nuts on the block a bit more for that bit when played live.

Why don't you understand that he does have faith? It is not something exclusively for Christians or other religious people. And you are right about this theme finding a nice continuation in MYM. I 'sang' both in Dutch last night, for fun, and it was really very vivid. I could almost see the Jehovas with their feet between the door while Eddie was singing this to them ;).

Is he though? He always says different shit. Theres 06 concerts where hes rambling about the moon and god and shit, and theres an interview somewhere where someone asks him something and he replies with something akin to 'this is one of the best lives i've lived so far' that sounded vaguely like something to do with reincarnation. And doesn't he mention god in sometimes and marker in the sand? Agnosticish wave-humping hippie is what ive always figured.

I took the lyrics to mean believe your own thing, don't be told/forced to believe
Something you don't believe in.

Until the lightning bolt sets you free. The moment when you realise hey that's all bullshit. I'm doing my own thing.

Sorta thing.

My summary for now:
I LOVE Getaway, Mind Your Manners and Swallowed Whole. :heartbeat:
When i think about :
1. I also like Lightning Bolt studio version very much
2. we still have to listen to the more challenging stuff as Infallible, Pendulum, Yellow Moon, My Father's Son.
3. i am prepared for Sirens with no expectations at all, so i'd at least like it (i believe in Mike on this one)
4. Sleeping By Myself was my favorite on Ukulele Songs so i might like the full band version,
5. The melody of Future Days is lovely, so there's a chance i'd enjoy the studio version,

..overall, at the moment on paper it looks like it's gonna be way better than Backspacer (as Mike said) & probably (for me) the best one since Vitalogy.

Ed or whoever his spirit is, is on his final go around. Next step nirvana. He's got this whole peaceful zen buzz off him when you see him. Good for him.

Yes. And since that colored line really makes me enthousiastic, at this moment LB is my favourite song :) (and it keeps rotating with the other ones; in fact they are all favourites right now)

I have no problem believing (!) that a rock singer who said in an interview in 1994 that he was an atheist, would be a less hardline atheist in 2013, or even an agnostic.

"There is no god with a plan" and "god is nowhere to be found conveniently" pretty much sum up what I've always believed Ed's religious stance to be.
