I suspect that it got tiresome for even them

I wonder if they would've tired of it had Romney been elected. Seems rare for such a politically motivated band to not write political songs for 8 years around one person's presidency, is all. Maybe... just maybe... that's why PJ didn't want to get back into the studio to finish the album until 2013? They wanted to know who won the election first....then decide on the theme?

No screeching. No screaming.

I think you may want to listen to the latter parts of Lightning Bolt before readdressing the above statement(s).
oh it sounds so good there. Same at the end of MYM. It is a great exclamation point. I can see being turned off if it is the entire song (ala johnny guitar, for instance)

To be fair it's just the "thoughts will soon arrIIIIIIVE" part that's grating me at the moment. I like the concept, just don't think it's "in his register" any more. Maybe I'd have preferred a more conservative delivery of that part on record and wouldn't have minded if he wanted to put his nuts on the block a bit more for that bit when played live.
I think that bit at the end of lightning bolt sounds rough . No god with such Miiiieeeeaaaghhhhtttssghthg*coughs up a lung*

I guess when Obama got elected, the nemesis was gone for Ed. Then his new nemesis started taking shape (religious fanaticism). Realistically all I ask is that they write honest songs and whats true to them and they seem to do that with their various themes. Whatever is occupying Ed's brainspace the most at any given time.

when I was a pre-teen and teen, listening to Alive, Release, etc....I really had no idea what those songs were about, but still loved them.

while I appreciate lyrics more now, I can still dig a tune based on the sound of the song, not the message.

alright!
The first four (five?) chords have that distinct 1991 feel in the way they flow from one another, almost like a slow acoustic SLTS. I like!

okay, I will say this one thing.

When your own people are in charge you'll be more likely to be attracted to criticizing structures and systemic problems.

When the bad guys are in charge you are more likely to personify everything systemic within their person.

this is a pretty natural reaction.

Me too. I fall in love with the tune first, lyrics are not that important.

I just reject this idea that if he's not writing explicitly about something it means he obviously supports it. When he was so anti-Bush, it was because he had inherent values, and two of them were anti-conolialism and anti-war. I really don't think he's suddenly going to love those things just because Obama has changed his tune, but neither is he obligated to write about it.

I think we agree that we want him to write about what's true to him/them. My thing is: Just Breathe and The End were perfect for that, yet they get shat on here for some reason. Let's face it, Ed's over 50, writing about death and leaving your loved one's seems very "true". I'd argue Backspacer was "very true". Lots of people don't like that truth.

Basing an album on who's President, kinda doesn't. seem so "true". And when your guy gets in, writing about religious fanaticism (and completely ignoring all other issues) seems almost like a scape goating to me, that's all.

I'm an unenrolled voter (it's what we call "independent voters" in MA) and a Catholic, and while I disagree with Ed's messages on some songs, I can't fault him for targeting religious fanatics.

For example, even though I'm Catholic, I support a woman's right to an abortion and, of course, I am all for gay marriage.

But I think Ed takes exception with those who do not make exceptions due to religious "rules."

i believe matt has none. I wonder if stone brought in more songs or if he really saved his favorites for Moonlander and Brad. I was skeptical of that argument before. Now I'm less so.
I guess if you've got a solo album coming out, that's natural... I don't really blame him for it.

that clip calls to mind mikes usual songwriting style ala Inside Job and Turning Mist. Basic open chords and dull progression. What am i missing here?

That this doesn't sound as bad as either of those songs, plus Ed will be writing and singing over it rather than him. It's instantly better for those reasons alone.
