Yes. If they had that kind of money, why didn't they spend it to properly outfit schools and make them safe?tragabigzanda wrote:(double posting in the elections 2020 thread)

Everything's perfectly all right now. We're fine. We're all fine here, now, thank you. How are you?

I agree in some ways, but usually staff are the first to go with big shifts like this. Faculty will be last.tragabigzanda wrote:My general feeling on this -- admittedly without having some firm numbers to back it up -- is that the university system is long overdue for a financial reckoning. Re: Anybody want a Corona?
So given the events from last night - my local coffee place will no longer be taking loyalty cards from midday. Used mine today - and it was free coffee time, so that worked out alright. Will be working from home for the rest of the week, and other then that not too much has changed....so far. I had been planning a surprise trip up to see my parents the weekend after next - I just hope that this can still go ahead.

Confirmed speculation! Thanks, Trag.tragabigzanda wrote:Confirmed it is from the CARES package. FWIW, people in higher ed have been talking about this since before the pandemic. They call it "the cliff" loltragabigzanda wrote:My general feeling on this -- admittedly without having some firm numbers to back it up -- is that the university system is long overdue for a financial reckoning. Like I said, you don't know what you're talking about if you think that anecdotal Ivy or Five College stories is anywhere near representative of the broader employment situation of faculty or the budgetary realities of the modern university.tragabigzanda wrote:lol. Re: Anybody want a Corona?
Just for reference about how off-base you are!
https://www.insidehighered.com/news/201 ... g-new-aaupSome 73 percent of all faculty positions are off the tenure track, according to a new analysis of federal data by the American Association of University Professors.
“For the most part, these are insecure, unsupported positions with little job security and few protections for academic freedom,” reads AAUP’s “Data Snapshot: Contingent Faculty in U.S. Higher Ed.” The report is based on the most recent data from the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System, from 2016.
AAUP’s report discusses long-standing concerns about the decline of tenure and what that means for academic freedom, as well as the “casualization” of academic labor and the unbundling of the traditional faculty role. But it also provides an up-to-date picture of who is teaching, under what conditions, where.
Breaking down non-tenure-track positions by institution type, it’s clear that tenure and tenure-track positions are more represented at research-intensive and other four-year institutions, where they are about one-third of the faculty. Tenure-line jobs are about 20 percent of all faculty positions at two-year institutions.

Just got a text - my Jiu Jistu gym is closing its doors for the rest of the week at least. This is one of the things I was worried about. Shit just got real
