I know this isn't exactly a novel sentiment but I just started a rewatch of The Sopranos (my gf's first time) and James Gandolfini is just incredible. I think over the years I started taking this performance for granted, but after getting some distance from it... man. Effortlessly real and nuanced

He is a true great. The accent gets mildly cartoonish by the end, just my opinion

I have a visceral reaction to advertising and promotion. There's just something about salesmanship that grates on me on a very base level and I react very negatively towards it. I want those people to suffer and I want their enterprises to fail.

My wife’s family is from Paramus and surrounding areas (where it’s set), and I disagree. They nailed it.
Well, I spent an afternoon in Paterson, NJ last fall and so I can tell you that Tony's accent is noticeably thicker in season six than it is in season two. I'm not even counting the pilot when he hadn't developed the accent yet and he was still speaking like Kevin Finnerty.

The accent is definitely much more pronounced in the later seasons. It's a gradual change so you don't really notice when you're watching along, but it's pretty striking when you go back to the early eps

A popular opinion on Reddit seems to be that his voice changed over the seasons because he kept getting fatter

We'll have to ask trag later if his wife's family in Paramus has had any weight gain and/or accent changes over the years before we can know for sure

We'll do a follow up interview in a year. Either I will be even fatter or will have lost a ton of weight. Then, you can be the judge.
