Backspacer had some political songs ...they were less obvious than Bushleaguer...But even a song like, lets say, Glorified G or WMA is political.

Mind your manners is political too...and seems a lot of what he is writing is hinted that way....

I said about 2 or 3 on most albums are political. I don't see it on Backspacer at all, which to me, may be one reason why I like Backspacer.

well, The fixer was released around the time Obama got into office...a lot of people thought it was about him too. It isnt and eddie himself told a different story, but i can see it as a political song too, like mind your manners is a political song.
My point is: Ed writes from a socio-political point of view most of the times. Even if he is clearly making a point ( wws/bushleaguer) or if the whole point is more subtext oriented.
He was more direct with his lyrics during the bush administration, perhaps because he felt it was worse than this one or the previous Clinton one...or because he felt he needed to be as direct as he could to get the message out there.

Also, I don't see a need for everyone to constantly harp on Bushleaguer as their political song. Look at Evenflow or Glorified G for other examples.

Yes, Mind Your Manners is about religion, not a political issue - like homelessness and how to deal with that. If Mind Your Manners was a political issue, there would be a policy-related to it. Welfare is the policy related to evenflow IMO.

Meh. If you can pinpoint anything that the song is "about"....and it's reaching to declare a song like that to be really "about" anything....it seems to be about music. You need a song? I've got some. But I need to know a few things: are you rising? Or falling? I need to know which song is going to best help you out. Maybe you're getting out of or away from something? Or you're angry? Tell me what kind of song you're in need of, cos I've got some.

And, of course, he wants to know if you've heard of diplomatic resolve.....because if that's your thing, he's got a song all about fixin' stuff.

First off, I think Ed is hot fire here. I like him when he sounds most engaged, and in that respect these songs recall his performances on Yield and Into the Wild. He obviously doesn't have the voice from '93 anymore, but his approach to these 4 songs is just right in my book. He doesn't get screamy either, which is a plus.

Do you honestly think Ed's vocal delivery is good in Swallowed Whole? Particularly, the chorus?

It's not any worse then R&B singers doing atrocious runs in their songs.

Ed's always taken liberty with his delivery and phrasing. Jeremy spoke in class today was made to sound something like 'Jeraamy spokane clahass t-dayyy'. Yellow Ledbetter needs no introduction either. He's always had a tendency to emphasise certain vowels or syllables or change words to fit the melodies. You may or may not like the way he pronounces words but to say this has crept in now is factually incorrect. This has been one of his unique attributes from day one.

You're right - he has. But, that's not what I'm saying. That sounded good. This does not. I'm not capable of actually typing out why what he does today is completely different from what he did in Jeremy or even Yellow Ledbetter. But, they are different.

Nope, I think there are realms of issues to get upset about that don't involve calling anyone out by name. Yet, I'd prefer he avoids politics altogether. My bet - if an R comes in in 2016 and wins, we'll hear more political stuff. I can't wait for more of Ed's views on geo-politics... that's for sure.

What I don't understand is the fanboi-type defense of this stuff. There's no need. You can be pro-Obama, you can be pro-PJ, you can be pro-Ed AND you can say - "yeh, he's probably just avoiding talking politics because he's an Obama cheerleader." Nothing is lost in saying all of the above.

I'm positive that a lot of this band's commercial downfall is attributable to shoddy journalism. Everyone writes terribly about Pearl Jam except for Jorge Farah.
