What movies are you watching?

I only saw BJM, Adaptation, and Eternal Sunshine. I still think Adaptation is great. Eternal Sunshine kind of sucks. Malkovich is somewhere between the two for me.

Should I watch Synechdoche?

It's definitely worth a gander, if not only because of how wildly creative and big-scoped of a project it is. I saw it several times many years ago soon after it was released to DVD. I was pathetic too back then and it was a commiserating buddy. Some miserable company. Tried to watch it recently with Raz who'd never seen it and neither of us were diggin' it. She couldn't care enough to try to follow what the hell was going on. Can be confusing. Might need to have the internet handy for help the first time through if you want to follow what's actually going on.

Whenever there's active promotion on the part of somebody else, whenever I see somebody all dolled up for a fancy photograph and someone's handing out flyers or whenever there's active promotion for something like that, as an imposition on my day, I hate all those people and I want them to fail. I have a visceral reaction to advertising and promotion. There's just something about salesmanship that grates on me on a very base level and I react very negatively towards it. I want those people to suffer and I want their enterprises to fail.

Totally. Yes, life can be extremely difficult and horrible but why focus on it when it can also be extremely beautiful? There's a time and place for it but I'm definitely not in that mindset these days.

Joel is too. But yeah, it feels like the entire point of his movies is "life is too hard let's cry about it" to me. Don't get me wrong, I've loved every one of his movies, except the one about the jewel thief, to the point of near obsession at times in my life. They can be great. It's just that, like trag, I'm at a point in my life where I'd just rather focus on things that feel more worthwhile. Inspirational, beautiful, fascinating stuff that doesn't focus on the universe being the vacuous, pointless, torturous hell hole it can feel like at times. When you watch Charlie Kaufman the person in interviews you can tell he has a really hard time. His phobias and torments are his characters', clearly.

i get that you’d rather focus on other things than what you feel with his works, but I just disagree on what you’re calling the point of his movies...despite the elements that may lead to someone feeling empty I still find a lot of beauty and life in his works, and completely fascinating
