What movies are you watching?

About half of Her last night. Bed time sneaked upon me. Very sad, fascinating. I love when the future is done well in movies. This is the prettiest dystopia. The minuscule levels at which people engage one another in this society is freaky. Most freakily because it's happening to us more and more as our dependence on technology increases. And AI is coming soon. The AI MUST have ulterior motives. "She" tells him everything he wants/needs to hear. It's horrific. I've seen it a few times before but it's been a long while. Gonna have to finish this soon.

it’s woe is me storytelling at its finest

See, that's the thing. It isn't "woe is me". It's that AI is so much smarter than people. It's basically a sci-fi horror movie disguised as a Kaufman-esque rom-com. Not a pity party. The main character is kind of pitiful, but he's pretty normal. This is where society is heading. It's a warning.

i really don’t get the pity party evaluation of Kaufman’s characters...it doesn’t feel like that’s what he was going for at all

Name one main character of his that is not a pitiful wreck of a poor excuse of a human.

what i mean is we’re not supposed to pity them necessarily and that’s not really the point of their characters...Joel in ESOTSM is not one though

Joel is too. But yeah, it feels like the entire point of his movies is "life is too hard let's cry about it" to me. Don't get me wrong, I've loved every one of his movies to the point of near obsession at times in my life. They can be great. It's just that, like trag, I'm at a point in my life where I'd just rather focus on things that feel more worthwhile. Inspirational, beautiful, fascinating stuff that doesn't focus on the universe being the vacuous, pointless, torturous hell hole it can feel like at times. When you watch Charlie Kaufman the person in interviews you can tell he has a really hard time. His phobias and torments are his characters', clearly.

i get that you’d rather focus on other things than what you feel with his works, but I just disagree on what you’re calling the point of his movies...despite the elements that may lead to someone feeling empty I still find a lot of beauty and life in his works, and completely fascinating

Look at the themes. They are all dealing with loneliness, pointlessness, listlessness, hopelessness, etc.

yeah, that one is the worst. I might rewatch it someday...that one is the only one i saw just once.

i have III recorded too and tbh i remember very little about it, but I think I only saw it once

yes those exist in the works of course, but I don’t think the point of them as that we’re supposed to throw pity parties for them and sympathize with all their plights...that’s all I’m saying...trust me I watched these in my darkest days and was enamored with the beauty and fascination I found despite those other elements...and I totally get that not everyone will experience these the same, but again I’m talking more about the intent not the viewer reaction

Fictional. He set out to adapt the book into a screenplay. He failed. But I agree this is more interesting coming from him because this is what he does (best). He can't make a story interesting without his sad shtick.

Between Two Ferns: The Movie. Laughed quite a bit. Better than I thought it would be.

Im not a huge fan. I appreciate what he tries to do, but i haven seen most of his work.
