My wife is leading a new program for first-generation college students to improve acclimation and retention on her campus based on the research from her dissertation that she finished in the spring. They're going to start in-person buuuuuut I don't think it's going to last long. She's been getting emails for a month about how excited they are to finally get to be on campus. It sucks.

Ugh. I feel for all parties involved in this. The teachers, the kids, the parents who thought they were getting rid of their kids.

I asked my students today and literally Every. Single. One. said that they want to be back on campus. I've never seen such unanimity of opinion from students on anything ever. Many also think that it would be a disaster if we tried to go back but they really wish we could. I'd say about half think we'll be online all year/go back on campus briefly before returning to online.

I believe 60. It's only a 2000-student campus, not as dense as some others. They're doing weekly testing. We'll see.

I wonder how all of this will affect the future of education and the long term effects of this current experience on students going through it.

If I had to guess, the inequities that exist today within school systems will be magnified as the upper middle class figures out ways to pay $30k a year for private schools leaving the rising middle class families to clump together and protect their "good schools" from COVID induced poverty. But I am an optimist, so take that with a grain of salt.

Out of control at this point. He and his roommate didn't even move to the quarantine dorm. They said either go home or stay here until the 30th when everyone but dumbass football players have to be out.

Also, the communication coming from the University is all over the place. It's pretty clear they didn't have a plan for this situation.

Good point, the delay in China releasing information to the rest of the world about the pathogen that escaped their labs has lead to one of the most catastrophic events in modern history.

But once we did know, the best, most prudent thing to do would be to deny it exists, call it a media hoax, explain that it will disappear without any action, take no responsibility when the first 3 ideas are wrong, then provide no assistance to states and local governments to take their own actions while believing that this will only hurt states that are mostly from the other political party.

It's like we are two hearts in the same chest. And that chest is sunken and weak, having to marry some trust-fund daughter of a scam artist / hotel magnate to save the family business that we ran into the ground and have since applied that same stunning level of incompetence towards the largest economy in the world.

Bad news overall as the situation is improving in the run-up to the election:

It's unlikely that colleges will learn from UNC and Notre Dame. There will be a back to college spike in the near future.
