Re: pearl jam and the 80s
How are we even comparing The Prodigy's legacy to ska? They practically invented rave in the 80s, and then fell into the alternative dance / breakbeat / dnb scene in the 90s.Lounge Lizard wrote:not a comparisonBurtReynolds wrote:and who could forget about the ska explosion! changed music forever.

Dividing it all up like that doesn't present a very accurate picture....not the least because it doesn't acknowledge how huge rap and soul-influenced pop and country music were at the peak of this "alternative music revolution" malarkey.BurtReynolds wrote:I always thought of the 90s as 3 different parts: first grunge, then gangsta rap, and lastly britney spears/backstreet boys crap.
The year-end singles for 1992:
1 "End of the Road" - Boyz II Men
2 "Baby Got Back" - Sir Mix-a-Lot
3 "Jump" - Kris Kross
4 "Save the Best for Last" - Vanessa Williams
5 "Baby-Baby-Baby" - TLC
6 "Tears in Heaven" - Eric Clapton
7 "My Lovin' (You're Never Gonna Get It)" - En Vogue
8 "Under the Bridge" - Red Hot Chili Peppers
9 "All 4 Love" - Color Me Badd
10 "Just Another Day" - Jon Secada
11 "I Love Your Smile" - Shanice
12 "To Be With You" - Mr. Big
13 "I'm Too Sexy" - Right Said Fred
14 "Black or White" - Michael Jackson
15 "Achey Breaky Heart" - Billy Ray Cyrus
November Rain is #17, Smells Like Teen Spirit comes in at #32, and that's about it for "rock" other than a few U2 singles carried over from the previous year.
"Well, yeah," you say. "But that's radio and sales of singles. Rock hasn't been big on those for years. You need to look at LP CD sales, and for those..."
1. Ropin' the Wind
2. Dangerous
3. Nevermind
4. Some Gave All
5. Achtung Baby
6. No Fences
7. Metallica
8. Time, Love and Tenderness
9. Too Legit to Quit
10. Totally Krossed Out
11. Ten
12. Cooleyhighharmony
13. We Can't Dance
14. Blood Sex Sugar Magick
15. Adrenalize
Look at all that "grunge!"

that's true, but none of these were pacakaged as a totalizing cultural phenomena like grunge was. Well, no, the rap stuff was as well. But again that's not relevant for this particular thread.

Inexplicably, the country-pop stuff turned out to have a far more reaching impact on the state of popular music.stip wrote:that's true, but none of these were pacakaged as a totalizing cultural phenomena like grunge was. Re: pearl jam and the 80s
Country pop crossover stuff was pretty huge, but we are still living in a post Garth Brooks world, so I don't think of it as strictly 90s music. I guess the same could be said of boybands, but in the late 90s, mainstream rock was practically dead, so it seemed even bigger then.

There doesn't seem to be a side-project thread on the new board so I'm putting this here, it's fitting

apparently it was re-released last month on Mike's label
