Same. I used to think it was a Texan thing, but it doesn’t seem very common here. I think it’s just a family thing. I like something to sop it up with and a starchy thing like rice also helps with the spice control. Cornbread works well too.

or Fritos
To me, the weird thing to do with chili is add sour cream to it.

Now that I think about it, I bet my inclusion of rice with chili has a lot to do with the cajun influences in my family. Gumbo gets rice. Etouffe gets rice. Red beans and sausage get rice. Jambalaya practically IS rice. Why wouldn’t you throw some chili on that rice too?

How about tortilla chips with chili, Doug? I like them for that. And the blue corn ones, too.

i do enjoy a tortilla chip dipped in a canned hormel chili without beans but I treat that more like a nacho based snack..

Cornbread is a nice base for chili.

Although cornbread is of course the preferred starch for chili, rice is perfectly acceptable. In fact, since chili comes from Mexican chili con carne, you'd kind of be an asshole to suggest you can't eat it with rice.

Rice above all else as a bed for chili. That said, cornbread isn't big here. I've only had shitty store-bought stuff. It sucked.

Okay, given the slight detour in the What's for Lunch thread, I wanted to hear from the RM Chili Crowd....

What do y'all tend to put IN your chili and what do you put ON your chili?

Are there any ingredients that you put both IN and ON your chili?

Talk to me.

For homemade, the only thing I eat with it is crackers.

For canned, I'll add cheese, onions, jalapeños, whatever I have on hand.

I don’t think that I’ve ever actually had canned chili. Is it any good?

So. Good.

And sometimes when I'm feeling really naughty... add just a smidge of ranch dressing. Not all the time, not all the time.
