PJ Political Hits and Misses...

Hit: Grievance. "For every tool they lend us/loss of independence" "Champagne breakfast for everyone". It's PJ at their most Libertarian and thus closest to my own political philosophy. Whether that was Ed's intent or not that's my interpretation of it anyway. He wrote it in response to the WTO situation so it's seems more of an attack on crony capitalism than anything.

Miss: Bushleaguer. I have my doubts about all wars (not just the ones Democrats don't like—which in the last 100 years is actually very few). The problem here wasn't Ed going after the administration so much as the ham-fisted way he did it that sounded utterly dated even before W's presidency was over. It's always a danger to be too specific in a political/protest song. The best artists know how to speak more to the underlying issues and ideas so that even when I don't always agree I can still respect the thinking.

For every tool they lend us was almost prophetic. I mean, think of internet shopping leading to shops closing down, youtube suddenly going to adverts, DVD's deciding which bits you can and can't fast forward.

I know what you mean about Bu$hleaguer. Perhaps "he's not a leader, he's a UKIP leaguer" would be more topical...

I'll cast my vote for Grievance. WMA is up there as well. I'm also a fan of Unemployable. I thought WWS was fine at the time for what it is.

I also like Bu$hleaguer. I enjoy how it bent a lot of Bush fans out of shape.

No More is probably the worst, although whatever -- I can't argue with the sentiment. EV was clearly going for a 60s protest song vibe -- I think it's just jarring to hear something like that coming from Pearl Jam.

Pearl Jam supports democracy. They know that society is best served by the most people voting possible. I agree with that, and see it as a non-partisan stance.
