Backspacer had some political songs ...they were less obvious than Bushleaguer...But even a song like, lets say, Glorified G or WMA is political.

Mind your manners is political too...and seems a lot of what he is writing is hinted that way....

Can you point me to the political songs on Backspacer?

I said about 2 or 3 on most albums are political. I don't see it on Backspacer at all, which to me, may be one reason why I like Backspacer.

well, The fixer was released around the time Obama got into office...a lot of people thought it was about him too. It isnt and eddie himself told a different story, but i can see it as a political song too, like mind your manners is a political song.
My point is: Ed writes from a socio-political point of view most of the times. Even if he is clearly making a point ( wws/bushleaguer) or if the whole point is more subtext oriented.
He was more direct with his lyrics during the bush administration, perhaps because he felt it was worse than this one or the previous Clinton one...or because he felt he needed to be as direct as he could to get the message out there.

Also, I don't see a need for everyone to constantly harp on Bushleaguer as their political song. Look at Evenflow or Glorified G for other examples.

What the actual fuck? You mean to say that Evenflow is political but Mind Your Manners isn't?

Yes, Mind Your Manners is about religion, not a political issue - like homelessness and how to deal with that. If Mind Your Manners was a political issue, there would be a policy-related to it. Welfare is the policy related to evenflow IMO.

I am relieved to know that the wall of separation between church and state is respected within pearl jam's music, if not elsewhere in America.

I'm positive that a lot of this band's commercial downfall is attributable to shoddy journalism. Everyone writes terribly about Pearl Jam except for Jorge Farah.

I have to admit.... I'm actually very nervous about Sirens. As the 4th track, it could really make or break this album. So far everything I have been reading sounds pretty positive and that's without the most intriguing songs yet (MFS, Infallible, Pendulum, YM).

But it's pretty clear from the listening party reviews that Sirens received a very mixed reaction. As in, the ladies all raved about it. The dudes were like... eh? That makes me pretty nervous. It just needs to be better than Just Breathe. That's my target. A song that I don't have to love, but definitely one that I don't want to skip only 4 tracks into the album.

Seriously, do you make a difference based on gender?! Are my words weighed differently than my boyfriends, for instance? That is kinda sad, is not it?...

I'm just making an observation about the reviews. It's neither a positive or a negative statement. I found it quite odd how clearly the reactions were split by gender. When I say "that makes me pretty nervous", it's the mixed reactions that make me nervous. Especially for a song that appears to be an anchor right in the middle of the 1st half.

I also tend to be much more hesitant towards PJ's ballads as compared to the more rockin' stuff. So when DaveVedder says "80's power ballad" ...that's a bit troubling.

But you can not really take a handful of people and then draw any conclusions about 'groups' like the men and the women, the old and the young, whatever. I have always hated that people assumed things about my taste or abilities just based on my skin color or my gender. Or age, nationality, whatever. It is not that you do that here, but every hint of that activates my defense (or attack) mode quicker than I would like. And I did not hear any eighties power ballad, but maybe that is just because I have really bad examples for that term in my mind. While in fact there were good ones too...

When Pearl Jam was new, some boy once told me Pearl Jam was music for girls, and I was seriously offended, for he did not mean that as a compliment. I could 'prove' it was not by the statistics of the Bugs mailinglist, which was about 40/60 f/m.
