Oculus Go/Quest/Quest 2

Post by McParadigm »

Pretty astoundingly good for $200. The resolution and hardware could be a bit better, but at $250 for a 64 gb stand-alone I’m sort of amazed by the results.

My son liked the Go enough that he saved up and just bought a 128 gig Quest. Should be here tomorrow.

Update: this is great. Easily the best resolution of any VR system. The wireless freedom is particularly awesome on games like Superhot.

Quest just got Star Trek Bridge Crew. I was not expecting that to land on the Quest at all.

Between that and Pistol Whip, I’m gonna have to start fighting the kids for time with this thing.

Just visiting my lonely thread.

I ended up buying one of these for my brother, who has spina bifida, as a birthday present to myself. Right now he is playing laser tag in vr with his niece, rushing up and down the corridors and dodging enemy fire like everybody else. They just high fived over a victory, then traded ammunition. They are 1,870 miles apart.

Dividends.

In quarantine, now, my kids have daily vr play dates with their cousins. They’ve even built a virtual playground in rec room that they congregate in.

Just got a Quest yesterday - we've exclusively been BEAT Sabering. I'll get Half Life: Alyx at some point and test out the Link.

Wasn’t feeling well today, so I took it off work and spent the morning in a virtual reality movie theater with my brother watching everything from D.A.R.Y.L. to the first third of the 1998 DC show. In between movies we played table tennis and golf.

Pretty good time.

Another ”McParadigm is loving this shit” report.

Spent this afternoon sitting out on the deck, fishing with my brother in vr. Wind, sun, rum, and a radio playing.

Sometimes when we’re in there I forget that he’s three time zones away.

How comfortable is it for extended periods? I've used vr a little, but never really for extended periods.

Do you experience any nausea or eye strain?

Some apps that involve movement over longer distances let you choose between “point and click” teleportation and joystick-based motion. I can’t do the joystick-based stuff...I get nausea. But very few apps involve that degree of moving around. Mostly you stay within your six foot space.

Head motion tracking has gotten pretty flawless in the last year, so that never causes me any trouble.

I’ve never experienced any eye strain. The first two or three times I put it on the helmet itself was a distraction, but now I forget it’s there at all.

Have you played the Half life Vr game, McP? I have seen videos of people playing it and it looks amazing.

One of the first things I did when we bought the helmet was watch a 360 degree video exploring the space station. It effectively demonstrated for me that 360 videos are pretty damn unimpressive.

Real VR Fishing. It looked pretty unimpressive to me on paper, right down to the dumb name, but it turns out to be pretty fun in solo mode (I equate it to a Nintendo fishing game in terms of mechanics and difficulty, but with fantastic environments and sound) and reallllly fucking great with a partner.
